Wanting to get louder

Recommended Posts

Right now someone figured out my box was 3.8 cubes at 31hz after disp. With that, a 15" BTL with no options and a Hifonics BXi2006D I hit a 141.7. That was my best score. I am trying to hit a 150 with this one sub. I am getting alot of different inputs on box sizes to use...and I know hitting a certain score has MANY varibles...but I figured to start off..a better box could help a good bit. It is in an extended cab truck, port up and sub up. I want pretty much SPL, but it is my DD. With a new box, I am still going to be listening to music. So I figured who better to come to for box advice then the people who make the sub.

well like you said there are many variables when metering and i dont know how you metered the first time but if your using the new termlab meters there is no way your be able to hit a 150 if the meter is on the window with just 1 fifteen. however if your using a different meter or different meter placement you might be able to hit this but if its metered the same as before there is no way a change in box is gonna get you a 8db gain. if you want to get it louder i would decrease the box size down to 3 cubes for better power handling and raise the tunning a bit ( around 35hz or a lil higher depending on the music you listen too) and depending on how much port area you have now maybe make that a little smaller also to increase power handling slightly. i would also recomend putting more power behind it. if your just burping it the sub should be able to handle a little more power with no problem.

If you're tuned around 31hz chances are it's tuned too low for your cab for spl. I'd spend some time trying to figure out your resonant frequency- and build around that. Having a port for daily and one for spl would be very beneficial since you could still be tuned low for music, and have a large® port tuned higher for burps. A lot of people with trucks seem to be happier tuned in the high 40hz range. Normally having more port area will help yeild some higher #s, even if only a few 10ths of a db. How much port area do you have?

As far as making the box smaller to handle more power- that's an idea if you have a lot more power. Since you're giving it 2k watts, what options do you have? I'd say doubling the power should give you a nice boost.

Even still a larger box should help the efficiency of it- meaning make it larger if you can. A larger box on the same power could increase the peak a bit. Why not try 5ft^3.

The best thing you can do is just try several different boxes and see what helps you get the best score. Experimentation is all you can really do to find out what works best for you.

what's your systems electrical upgrades like?

Stock..besides big 3.

Upgrade your electrical and you score will 99.9% go up...

I have seen a car with stock electrical and only 1200 watts score high 130... (voltage drops below 9 volts)

he got an extra batt, big three, another run of 0/1, and a 160 HO amp alternator and is now hitting low 140's on a TL... SAME amps, subs etc etc....

You can tune higher for pure SPL burps but honestly unless your total aim is to compete spl and don't care much about how it sound Daily then go for it...

If not try to upgrade your electrical (the most overlooked yet most essential upgrade in an audio system above 1K watts) you will be surprised what results you'll get after..
