Hows this sound ?

Recommended Posts

In my search for some subs I've been pointed to this forum. I'm looking to replace a set of 12'' Type-R's.

The Type-R's were a decent SPL sub but I'm looking more for SQ. I'm hoping to achieve the SQ and SPL same as, or close to a W7. I listen to 50/50 rap/rock. As of now my plan is......

2 12" Q Series 2ohm

Box & Amp:

2 Alpine MRD-M1005's (each 1000x1 at 2ohm)

Sealed rectangular Box 1.3 cuft per sub

1999 4 door Tahoe. behind the second row, subs facing downwards

Also... I have no idea what the BP does. Whats recommended RMS with that option.

Thanks for the help

Alex

If those amps ARE NOT 1 ohm stable...I would not get dual 2ohm subs...instead I'd get dual 1ohm subs and wire them in parallel for a 2ohm load per amp.

Q's are AWESOME subs. They should hold their own against w7's...but I'd look at going ported for great SQ and TONS of punch.

Thanks for the info....I was unsure about the Ohm load. Also what is the best enclosure for the Q. I'm looking for deep base..... but MAINLY I want SQ and good response. Being that I'm getting two of them and they're going in a Tahoe, i assumed that combo would create good SPL's in a sealed box. If ported is better let me know.

I've got mine in a ported box and I'm going back to sealed.

I love these subs. In the 12" test on ROE, the Q tested well above the W7 as far as SPL. SQ is subjective.

I actually like te W6s better than the W7s as fas as SQ. But even if Fi was only equal to JL...how can you justify the price difference?

Fi owns JL.

You might build a ported box just to see. I have used mainly sealed boxes, but (IMVHO) ported boxes are better for everything except extreme SQ.

oh-so-wrong

chit dude, don't give advice when you don't know what you're talking about. 2 1 ohm voice coils in parallel means you will get a final load of 0.5 ohms. parallel everything and you end up with 0.25 SWEET !

2 dual 1 subs will give you a final load of 1 ohm if you wire them like this : each sub's coils in series then wire the subs in parallel.

I think he might have missed that the OP has 2 mono amps. In his application, he would need 2 dual 2ohm Q's.

To the OP. Def try them ported if you have the room. I have my pair of Q 12"s in just under 4cf after sub and port displacement. I like it.

He said he was going to use one sub per amp. I got series and parallel mixed up at 2:30 in the am(sorry). Chances are, if he knows the difference between series and parallel he wouldn't be asking the question in the first place.

Although the enclosures design has various tweaks on my opinion below in general i believe that

Sealed enclosures has better SQ

Ported has better output

ah yes, he doesn't know the difference so it doesn't matter if we give correct info or not.

the Alpine MRD-M1005 is not 1ohm stable, so you will want dual 1 ohm Qs. But you want to wire the coils in series. That is wire the + to the _ on the woofer and use the remaining _ and + to run to the amp.

if sealed is only for extreme sq, where does that put IB?

so much SQ it's dangerous to listen to...

lol...

I love IB applications, but currently dont have an HT room that I could stick them in. I have finalized a nice little IB15" with 23 mm of Xmax (Xmech limited not Xmag) that will be -cheap-. A pair has more Vd than a Q18, is more efficient, has a flatter IB response, and costs a fair amount less. IB seems to be making a come back in SQ circles, which I couldnt be happier with. We are doing quite a few custom IB Qs for the Hybrid Audio/ Scott Buwalda camp as well.

Just had a customer order a dozen Q18s for a HT IB setup. Cant wait to see some pics and measurements of that one :)

as mentioned, make sure you get dual 1 ohm Qs. take the positive from one voice coil to the negative of the other voice coil. take the remaing positive and negative and go to your amp.

with 2kwrms on tap (or real close to it), a downfiring, sealed affair will rock in your tahoe. while you could gain peak output by going ported, you'd have to tune very low in order to grab the overall flat response of the proper sealed box. and tuningthat low, you won't necessarly have the peak gain of a higher tuned ported affair, save at the real low end.

and listening to dopey will induce mild cases of dizziness of you wade through the various responses laced with some knowledge and guessing. we recommend taking in his posts in small amounts to determine one's tolerance at first. after which it's strictly up to the individual to decide whether or not to indulge one's self in dope.

This of course is in complience with the Surgeon General's warnings, just remember, read at your own risk.

A dozen 18's in an IB, holy crap!!

Thanks for all the info....I was also wondering what the BP option is and what does it do. Is 1000 RMS enough without the BP option. Is 1200 watts RMS enough with the BP option. I've never heard these subs so I'm basing my decision and info on a little research, I'm definitely no expert.
