BL 10" got warm this morning

Recommended Posts

I was banging it at mid level volume (25 out 0f 60) for about an hour. Its getting 1200 watts rms from a 9.1 at 1 ohm, my gains must be set a little to high.

I bought an old bass mechanic cd from circuit city yesterday, this morning I put it in just before I left my home, by the time I made it to work I was at the end of the cd and was listening to test tones, they went from 20hz all the way to 99hz, I only listened up to 35hz before I cut it off.

I felt my amp before leaving the vehicle, it too was warm, I have never been able to get my 9.1 warm before. I then checked the BL in the trunk, the dust cap and surround were warm as well.

I never once smelled any coil or glue burning, I stuck my nose into the slot port and took a good wiff, nothing. Is it ok for the dust cap and surround to get a little warm or am I possibly clipping my amp .

I am going to try and see what voltage is comming from my amp with a DMM, I think I am supposed to be around 34 volts for 1200 watts.

What do you guys suggest?

I've said it once, ima say it again.

NOoooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Do NOT set the gains with a damn dvom, baaaaaaaaaaaad idea, whoever came up with that one should be shot. Ill get you a link to explaining why you shouldn't set your gains like that.

DMM doesn't tell you if your clipping a signal or not. I really wish the people on the forums would have NEVER told/mentioned about how to set a gain with a DMM or that you "HAVE" to set your gains with a DMM...the only time you need to set them with a DMM is when you are gain matching multiple amps on one single sub, or one single load.

All it measures is AC voltage, now doing the weird funky equation coming up with you should use "35 volts" has quite a few flaws..

That 35 volts may have the amp wide the hell open bass boost cranked and everything else to get it, by that time its a 100% clipped, dirty, square wave signal that the amp makes even worse. All a gain is is a knob that lets you adjust the RCA output voltage to INPUT voltage on the amp, when you abuse it bad things happen, (Deck output = Amp input) The two should be the same. If your deck does 2.5v out, then you should set the gain accordingly to 2.5 volts of input.

General rule of thumb - Stay under half way, no more than 3/4 gain...and don't go wide open on the volume knob...NO BASS BOOST...bass boost is a knob that shouldn't even be there, does nothing but make an even dirtier signal.

Easiest way to do it, turn mids/highs to your normal listening level on the headunit, back the gains down on the amps, adjust up accordingly until it sounds as if it blends well...

Regardless - If you are hearing a 'pop' sound you are unloading the woofers, easy on the gains and the volume knob.

Now, with that said.

If the coils are not geting hot (you aren't smelling them) it should be fine...when you beat on them for a while they are going to get a little warm.

A coil will get warm enough to blister you with a few hundred watts. Find a sub where you can touch the coil and try it if you don't believe me :) Ever touch a 100-watt bulb? And that is through two excellent insulators (glass and air).

It'll be alright if you aren't smelling it as Nick said.
