Modest system with RL-i8s

Recommended Posts

sweet! you won't be disappointed!!

I'm sure the RL-i8 will be a hit (pun intended). Unfortunately, I had the discount pulled out from under me, so I had to re-re-evaluate my components and amps. Here is what I finally put together, everything else was ordered today.

Receiver: Pioneer DEH-P5900iB

Front: Focal 165V1

Component Amp: Memphis 16-PR100.4

Sub: SoundSplinter RL-i8 DVC4, sealed ~0.35

Sub Amp: Memphis 16-PRD500.1

I'm excited and nervous at the same time. I have no experience with Memphis Audio, but everything I've read suggests they make some quality amps at a good price. I would have loved the Sundown SAX-100.4, but it was simply out of my budget. Crossing my fingers that it all comes together well...

P.S. Any suggestions on forums/sites for learning more about the electrical system? I need to get a handle on caps, yellow tops, and the math behind car audio. :)

unless you planned it this way, the pr500d will only be showing the rl-i 250-300wrms. the pr500d makes it's power @ 1ohm, with a d4 sub, the lowest you can get is 2ohm. and too be honest, while i used to be a huge memphis fan, i think i'd recommend spending your money elsewhere. memphis's quality has taken a serious nosedive the last year or so.

If you knew me better you'd know I plan *nothing*. ;) Seriously, thanks for the heads-up. I just called the vendor back and cancelled the Memphis amps, replacing them with a single JL 300/4. The sub amp will have to wait a month... for me to save up more cash or the wife's rage to dispell (whichever comes first).

Glad you stopped delivery on that. The best part of your setup so far is the Rli8 which you are going to love.

are you bi-amping? if not, you can use the extra 2 channels on your 4 channel bridged at 8 ohms for the sub until you get your sub amp.

Yes. I've also talked with Mark/Aaron at SSA and they're hooking me up with a SAX-100.4 and SAE-1000D. I'm concerned that the 1000D may be overkill for my system. Unfortunately, Mike @ SoundSplinter is out of SVC RL-i8's (which would have gone nicely with the SAX-100.2).

If it sounds like my head is going 16 different directions, it's because it is.

your welcome on the heads up, that's why we are here.

that sundown combo should be the bomb!! while the 1000d is indeed a bit overkill, it's nice to have a bit of headroom as you can definitely achieve the output your looking for well before clipping the amp. and you always have power on tap for adding that second sub, lol.

and like sean(///m5) hinted at, teh rl-i deserves a far better amp then the pr500d.

Some final updates to add... I've ordered the components from Madisound and will be picking up the amps from denim this weekend. Instead of the 1000D, I'm going with a bridged Sundown 100.2 at 8 ohm. The RL-i8 will be ported (dimensions TBD). Getting excited, can't wait for it all to get here!

Receiver: Pioneer DEH-P5900iB

Front: Seas 27TAFNC/G, CA18RLY

Comp Amp: Sundown SAX-100.4

Sub: SoundSplinter RL-i8 Dual 4 ported

Sub Amp: Sundown SAX-100.2 bridged

It's definitely a modest system, but I think it will be a good match for my needs. I've also ordered a roll of RAAMmat, now I need to get schooled on my wiring needs.

i like your planned setup :D

other mid-bass options in the same budget : seas er18rnx, ca18rnx (a nice step up from the rly) and peerles exclusive 7

1/0 will be great to run from the battery to a distro block. same goes for ground.

Ya, he has another thread about suggestions for mids. Problem is he doesn't have too much depth to play with, and the RLYs are the only Seas option under 3".

woot for an sq setup

for all your wiring needs:

www.knukonceptz.com

from the looks of it, you need a 4 gauge amp kit...alhtouhg going 1/0 never hurt ;) seeing the 4 channel kit is out of order,

http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/shop/in...p;productId=121

looks mighty fine. or you can build your own amp kit (pm johnecon2001)

Looks like most of their kits are out of stock. I'll have SSA ship me one of the PK4DY's.

More updates...

I met up with denim today and picked up the 100.2 and 100.4 amps. They look great! I started construction on a TL box for the RL-i8 by ripping the MDF to width. Tomorrow I'll use the radial to cut everything to length and start assembly.

P.S. Yes, denim, I'm typing this on the iPhone.

Yeah I got to see the phone. That thing is very cool and visual movement is as fluid as on the adverts. Thanks again for getting the Sundown amps from us.

That phone is teh chit. Not to sound like a PR flunkie, but I think it's the "convergence" device everyone's been waiting for. If only it was on Verizon's network.

I finished cutting the MDF last night and dry-fitting the TL pieces. I'm still waiting on my terminal block, so final assembly probably won't happen until tomorrow night. I've been taking lots of pics though, so expect a build log soon.
