how to set gain with Oscope??

ive searched for a while with no luck. i have access to a O-scope to set it but i was wondering if ther is anything special i need to know to set it?? any info will help too.

If your looking for the point right before clipping, turn the knob untill the sine wave starts to clip, then turn it back just a tick.

clip = a square or Flat peak on the sign wave....

good signal should be nice and cruved on the peak of the sign wave...

Of course your amp will clip differently with different loads, so you sort of need your speakers connected to do this. Which also means they better be able to take the power otherwise you are going to blow your speakers in the process of gain setting.

you dont need a load unless its class D, a load wont change the point of clip

Class D need the load to work properly, they can produce very funny output waveforms without a load as it makes up part of the output filter. and they can go pop if powered with no load

i prefer to use a scope instead of a DMM

thanks for the info. i dident get a chance to set it today, too busy at work. probally do it next week.

i have a 15"Q with a SoundStream 1500D. iam purty sure the sub can handle that amp fine.

if i were to set it with a DMM what voltage would i be looking for?

If you have access to an OScope, completely ignore anything you heard about using a DMM to set the gains. An OScope is infinitely better for setting gains...just don't bother with using a DMM when you have an OScope.

call the dealer or maker of you amplifier and give them your impedance load and what model amp you have. they can tell you what to set your gains to in volts. hen use just a dmm for lets say 80 volts. put it on ac and turn the gain till you reach 80 volts.
