Like Jim said you can build it out of anything. I've built hardwood, birch, and MDF boxes. The advantage of MDF is that a sheet only costs ~20bucks while a good piece of BB ply is ~70.

MDF will not come in as many grades as Birch.

Birch is lighter...but more expensive. If you decide to go with Plywood, make sure you get VOIDFREE ply...that means there aren't any airpockets in the middle, which can cause rattles and buzzes.

MDF wont have any voids so you don't need to worry about it.

With proper bracing they will both be stiff enough...just birch will be lighter (something to think about if you're doubling up on wall thickness in a smaller car)

Especially considering that my poor little ported Rli8 box is near 90lbs with the driver. MDF is teh heavy.

Full sheet of MDF is just shy of 100 lbs.

Yeah, tell my yukon about the weight of MDF :(

My rear end looks like it's been lowered with around 400lbs of box + audio equipment in back. :(
