Going shopping friday...need some input.

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I am finally ready to order my midbass and my tweeters. They will be powered by either a JBL 75.4 (100X4) or a Sundown Audio 100.4 (100X4), and run active by an Alpine 9815. I have narrowed it down to five choices I just need to make sure they will mesh well together and I am open to any other options in my price range.

Option 1: Alpine Type X (ditch the Xover)

Option 2: Pioneer TS-720PRS (ditch the Xover)

Option 3: Seas 27TFFNC and a Seas CA18RNX

Option 4: Peerless exclusives With the Seas 27TFFNC

Option 5: Mach5 MLI-65 with an undetermined tweeter.

My budget is $300 for mids and tweets. the lower the better but I will spend $300 max, not including shipping.

I'd be stuck between Options 3 and 4...hard decision, both are excellent midbasses.

Just to confuse it some more, I held one of the new E18NX drivers at Madisound and think it could be a little upgrade on the CA in the midrange realm, but still have the potent midbass of the RNX series.

Otherwise, I only see two options on your list.

Option 4 if midrange is more important than midbas, option 3 if midbass is more important, and perhaps 3 with the E18 instead of the CA.

Note I haven't heard the E and I don't think anyone has. They didn't have anything to plug it into in the short time I was at Madisound, but from looking & reading and understanding the design goals at Seas I think it would be a very natural fit.

To add to the confusion, I think I might try the MLI-65's and Seas 27TFFNC/G active in the honda.

Based on Zaph's graph, the MLI does fine into the lower end of the 27TFFNC/G range

Sean,

Is the E18 driver you are talking about the 6.5 with the reed cone? The guys over at DIYMA were pointing it out and wanted me to check it out. I dont know if I should be a guinea pig on my first active install...lol

Denim,

any idea when you will have the MLI-65 in stock?

Actually a 7, but yes the Reed cone. I was the first one to actually hold one in the car audio world. All of the information that I shared came direct from Seas through the guys at Madisound. I drove through their last Friday, stopped to buy a pair but realized the Revs were on a sick sale so I ended up with them instead. I am going to yank the W18E out of my car and build some bookshelves for home and needed a replacement. I was sold on the E's from their specs alone, but couldn't say no to the Rev's either.

I don't think I'd consider it being a guinea pig in that it is Seas who stated they are trying to release a driver with the low end response of the CA, but with a more detailed midrange. Personally it was what I was going to use, but I already own the CA and won't buy two sets of any one driver as I'd rather have the variety to compare things with.

I like the revs a whole lot but they float just a bit out of my price range...I am going to need to look into the "E" a little more and see how it compares to the ca.

The mounting depth on the E is a bit more attractive its only about a 4cm difference. I think I might go with the E. It appears to have pretty much the same specs and is only $2 more.

Any bets on how they will sound IB in my door?

The MLI's wont be here for a little while, so if you are wanting to get started soon I would go with Seans idea on the Seas.

I don't have experience with the Exclusives, but my HDS Nomex drivers I guess you could consider their fraternal twin.

Specs are very similar, a big difference that is noticeable by looking is the HDS does not have a phase plug, and supposedly the Exclusive has more shorting rings in the motor, however it's been discussed over on DIYMA that the extra rings probably don't make that much of an audible difference.

I enjoy the HDS mids very much, they have excellent midbass, and midrange is very good up till about 4k-4.5k where it starts to naturally roll off, most small format tweeters can easily pick up from there.

Oh, and don't let the 6.5" spec on madisound fool you, it's a true 7" driver.

I am running 1) right now, and the midbass on the Type X's is lacking.

I am going to be purchasing something like option 3) next week... just have to see how much depth I have to play with here.
