Planning on buying some Fi subs, need advice though.

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forums here; first post. Let's see, I have a 1986 Camaro Iroc. I'm building a box to fit in the well of the hatch(if anyone is familiar with these cars). I do not think I have room for a ported box, the design for the box yields a little over two cubic feet. So basically I just need help on what subs to buy. I've heard, and it seems like, that Fi is a quality brand so I'm pretty sure I want to go with them. Anyway, I'm looking between two SSD12s or one Q15. I have had two DB Crossfire 10s before and one 15" solobaric Kicker L5 in my car before. When I bought this car I had to get rid of the Kicker in order to be able to store the t tops. The Kicker 15" didn't hit notes above 60hz at all really, so I'm not sure if I should get another 15(Q15).. do they do well at higher notes? I'm looking for low end bass but it was kinda embarrassing to hear the speaker just hum barely at 65 hz. Anyways though. My real question is is would the two 12s be better than one Q12 OR Q15? I've always liked 2 subs better but I don't know the real difference. I have slightly more knowledge than an amateur I'd say so yea I don't know too much about all of this stuff. With the Q15 I was planning on getting the Rockford Fosgate T10001BD but I'd probably have to get a bigger one.. like 1500 rms for two 12s right? All opinions and advice I'd appreciate, thanks.

I've messed with the cars a little bit. Personally i believe you have enough room to do a pair of SSD 12's with the copper coil option, with ~1600 watts (give or take). I dont think you have enough room (physically speaking) to mount a 15" sub firing up back there without having a really funky shaped box up top.

Thanks!

Well the box is going to be funky shaped.. on the parts you can't see anyway. Have you ever seen those boxes that just look flush with the well or w/e.. That's what I'm doing.

Something like this 519160_124_full.jpg

That's about 2 cubic feet.... I have enough room for 2 12s, 1 15 or maybe even one ported 12, like the btl

I'm just trying to see what would be the best out of those.

Bang for the buck the SSD's are more power/dollar for dollar oriented...

They'll sound great in the sealed box, get loud and won't break the bank in having to get tons of power and electrical upgrades to get them to their full potential.

Even later on if you think you want to give up a wee bit more hatch area you could put them in a ported enclosure and they'd be much louder than sealed (respectively).

Thanks!

I will second the 2 12" SSD option I think you will be very pleased with them.

I had 2 12" MTX 5000s in a sealed box in the back of a 1990 firebird and was very pleased with the output from them so the SSDs should be ALOT better then those were.

Thanks for all the quick replies. The 2 12s sound good from you guys' advice. Just to make sure though, 2 of those would sound better than 1 12" btl.. cause it seems to me that I could get 1 btl with a ported box(seems like everyone likes ported better) and it alone would have 400 or so more watts rms than the 2 12s for less money. Sorry about all the questions, as you can see I've got some stuff to learn.

Ported puts better numbers on the meter, but are peaky.... Meaning they play the frequencies around it's tuning very loud but the others are played very soft (a Sharp or steep roll off)....

Sealed gives more SQ to the systems resonance... Though not as loud as ported it has a smoother roll off (depending on enclosure size) so that more frequencies plays in the same range of volume as possible (a gradual or smooth roll off).....

Just FYi the owner of Fi Scott has SSD's in a sealed enclosure, Nick has an SSD 12 in a Sealed enclosure And if i'm not mistaken shawn the other Fi tech has a chit load of SSD's in a sealed enclosure... Not saying anything but to have all the techs running sealed enclosures it's fair to say that sealed isn't a bad choice....

they're all old and deaf allready so daily spl doesn't apply to them... :P j/k guys :D I think there is also a good reason why they run SSDs sealed, and I'm hoping I can try a pair of them :D

Actually Tom (tprj5) is the guy that has/had the 8 15" SSD's sealed in the blazer..

Shawn has 8 btl 15's in a big ported box in the van :)

I think it's in the design of the box though. My ported btls have a very smooth response. Especially in the lower end (1db difference between 32hz and 42hz last time I was metered). I think while the ported box does play louder around its tuning, it plays loud at all the frequencies I want it to. just my opinion.

Ok, what about all the options on the ssd? What are they? I know what the BP power is but I don't know if I should get it.. I'd have to buy a 2000 watt amp with that right?... with the BP option each of them would be around 1000 rms or so?

Nope just 1500 watts or so

A sundown 1500d would be great for a pair of them, or even one of the Kicker 1500's would work fine

Is that with or without any of the options.. I'm just asking if I would need any of the options if I only got a 1500 rms amp. Also, where would I buy a sundown 1500d... I've heard them mentioned before but a google search doesn't really show any official web page or anything.

I believe we responded to your email about the 1500D. Also I agree with Nick, go for the SSD's.

Yea I emailed you guys, thanks for the quick reply. That is the set up I'm going with, as soon as I transfer money to the checking account in about 10 mins I'm ordering both.
