advice on vehicle specific enclosure

Recommended Posts

Hello guys new here and I am looking to replace my JL 12W7 with a 15" Mag. I am running the 12W7 with a JL 1000/1 in a tuned enclosure(custom build to 32Hz). I am looking to increase SPL and by moving to a larger sub(Mag) using the same 1000wrms. I am pretty sure this Mag will outperform my 12w7 what do you guys think?

Could you guys reccomend optimum enclosure sizes for my Dodge Magnum. I am looking to maintain SQ as the 12w7 did a good job in that sence. I am willing to give up as much room as needed in the trunk for the enclosure. I will take the reccomended specs to a pro box builder for fabrication. all input is greatly appreciated.

I happen to know where a custom-made box/amp rack is for a Dodge Magnum, all ready to go :)

Used to house an Adire Brahma 15"...

I recommend the enclosure suggestions we have on our web page. They're there for a reason - the tuning and enclosure volume works out very well for all applications. If you want to, you can go larger (like 4 cubes) but keep the same tuning.

BTW: Be ready for better SQ while being a LOT louder at the same time. :)

The reason I am inquiring on box spec possibilities is simply due to the vast variations on enclosure volumes used by many Mag users. I have read many posts on this forum that show positive results deviating from reccomended specs. It seems as if a majority build SEALED enclosures for this sub. Do sealed enclosures due this sub more justice or is this just a personal opinion. I listen to a wide variety of music including metal, guitar oriented music, heavy bass material, bass mechanic and everything in between. I have maxed out my 12W7 and 1000/1 combo and need more low end output. The 12W7 lacks punch with kick drum and double bass notes(crossed over at 100Hz). Maybe the enclosure has something to do the subs capabilities and handicaps.

Would you give me an idea of how sealed to spec and ported to spec may sound with my 1000/1 tuned properly and a larger sealed and larger ported(4cubes as you mentioned). Box fabrication is my weakness as I am a wiring junkie and I want to learn different dynamics of bass output including cabin gain, vehicle acoustics and speaker parameters. Sorry for rambeling on just curious.

Do me a favor first, turn your crossover down to about 75Hz and see how you like it. Also, what's the slope on that? Also, what are your full enclosure specs?

My enclosure is exactly 1.75cu. ft made from 1" MDF and 1.5" baffle tuned to 32Hz. I am running a set of a/d/s/ 346cs 6.5" comps, tweets in the dash and woofers in the stock door location powered by a JL 300/2. The reason I set my crossover so high is due to the lack of MB responce from the comps. My vehicle is 80% deadened with Raamatt which has helped to clean up road noise and rattles. I am running a set of CDT- 69X 6X9 comps in the rear panels with 560 crossover and tw24 tweeter upgrades powered by a JL a2150 for rear fill.

I have been known to blow 4 hours at a time tweeking my amps recalibrating input voltage sensativity and crossover settings to achieve different balances. Oh HU is pioneer DEH-7800MP which I could care less for. I recently installed a remote bass control to the 1000/1 for EQ flexability at dash and found this feature pretty much worthless.

The 1000/1 is currently tuned like this

Q 1.1

cf 45

slope 24dB

LPF 100Hz attempting to increase SPL and wider range of bass notes

gain 54.7V max unclipped volts to 3ohm sub

input V low HU is 5V preamp outputs

sonic filter 25Hz

Thanks for beeing observant and looking outside the box! I will adjust my crossover setting down to 75-80Hz which should allow my sub to produce in a more optimum range. Wish I had more MB presence to close the gap. Oh well, we often can't have it all.

If those are your goals, go 2.7 cubic feet and call it a day. I was under the impression that output was your main goal.

Listen to Jim though - turn that bass EQ off and turn the x-over to 75 Hz or so.

And once you get the Mag, turn your sub sonic filter off.

Ok a sealed enclosure at 2.7 cu ft. is your reccomendation based on the info you currently know. Do you think a sealed enclosure for the Mag would yeild a lower SPL than the 12W7 in a tuned enclosure? I know it is difficult to say for sure, but based on the TSP of each sub and your experience. The thing I am worried about is the Xmax of the 12W7(29mm) exceeds the Magnum(27mm) and the thermal power handeling is about the same(12W7) needs 1000wrms to perform at its peak in a tuned enclosure. Now I think the 15" Mag may have a few inches of cone area on the 12W7(but we must remember rollover surround technology of the 12W7).

I've always been one to do my research when making an investment $600+ for sub and enclosure hence the questionsand what ifs. I was hoping that moving up to a 15" sub I would achieve more SPL than current set up taking advantage of increased cone area. Do I need to consider a tuned enclosure to exceed the output of my current set up? Thanks

Loosing output isn't a possibility. The 12w7 has a tad more cone area than a normal 12 due to their roll-over surround, but it can't touch a 15" for cone area.

Mag's stomp on W7's in the lanes all the time. As far as I know, a Mag has never lost to a W7. Jake (Sundownz) 's brother has two 12" Mags ported in an extended cab pickup and he beat a pair of 13w7's ported with twin 1000/1's by a considerable amount at his last competition. It happens all the time really. I was interested to see what would happen the first time we encountered W7's (I knew what would happen but I didn't know by how much), but that was when Hollis had his 4 12" Mag's that did 151's and we beat most pairs of 13w7's by 10 dB on average (as it's fair to compare two 15's to four 12's).

And we rate ours at 27mm. It isn't confirmed b/c of how much Xmax we have, we know how good the subs perform, and there's no use in bothering with 2mm of linear throw because you'll never hear the difference. If you had the exact same sub with the exact same parameters (they'd actually look different to get the same T/S's while upping Xmax without affecting Le) and one had 2 more mm of Xmax, you wouldn't be able to tell which one was which.

So not only are you going to go up in SQ, but SPL won't be a problem either. :)

You know, I loved my 13W7, but once I got the Mag, I've never wanted anything else. It has taken the place of all my other subs and will continue to do so.
