installation of a crappy capacitor?

I have an Xpress Capacitor(new) I'm trying to install and it's not quite working. I charged it correctly but when I measure it with a voltmeter, it only measures 3.5V I tried to install it anyways, hoping that it will charge the rest by itself. So I hooked it up right next to the amp. The digital readout doesn't display. I followed the instructions and it doesn't work. I asked a friend and he said I should try hooking up a remote wire to the cap. Any ideas?

If you want to test it, just hook it up in parallel to the circuit.

If you did that and you didn't get the readout to light, does the display have a remote wire that needs to be wired in to the switched 12V?

How do you check to see if something is working if by definition in the first place it never did anything?

I will look for some type of a connection for the remote wire behind the digital readout display tomorrow. And if it does work,.. it'll most likely be used as a filter for my coaxials. And if it still doesn't work, I'll sell it as it is, which was brand new.

Some people swear by caps, others hate them. Personally I've never seen good results from one, besides looking fancy. I'd put in a small battery. Just my thoughts.

My last cap needed a remote wire to turn on-like an amp, I'd do like they said and check you aren't missing something.

You're right about the remote wire. I hooked the rem wire up to a golden colored screw behind the digital display. Now it shows the voltage. Odd that this information was excluded from the installation instructions. Anyways, like I said, I am using it since it's been sitting around doing nothing. Seems to filter the sound a little better for the fronts as I didn't bother hooking it up to the sub amp. Thanks for the help.

drwang84, what you're experiencing is called "denial". You're tricking yourself into believing that it's doing something.

Ahh, capacitors...

Unless you have a 40 farad powerbank, or unless you want to buffer voltage spikes in an SQ vehicle, the capacitor isn't gonna do much of anything but add some resistance to the system and MAYBE help out some small regulator lag, at best. A 1 farad capacitor will be depleted by a 500 watt amp in less than a second, and a lot of the power they hold isn't usable.
