If I'm reading the news right, most of the violence now in Iraq is between Sunni Muslims and Shiite Muslims,

Which has been going on since about the time of Mohammed.

I think we have an obligation to help the country we bombed into submission, yes, but staying until it's "over" is a Western thought. We like to think things are over in time for the next elections, but in truth these people have been in conflict for over a thousand years. That's not going to get fixed anytime soon.

This isn't Germany or Japan after WWII...

very well said. this "War" has been going on since before we were a country, and will probably be the last war going on when the world does come to an end.

i think staying till it's over means the fighting is curbed to the point that, like previously mentioned, the iraqi police and military can easily handle any flareups. however, like also previously mentioned, i think we are going to have to force some confidence in those organizations as they don't seem very well prepared to shadowbox, let alone take on guerrilla fighters.

of course i personally like the idea of turning the whole place into one giant slab of glass, get with china and open up a strip mall. but that's jsut me.

The end will be when the people of Iraq finally get fed up with the foreign fighters killing their own and start turning them in to the authorities. The correlary to that is the authorities must not be totally corrupt. That will be the end as far as we're concerned. A similar situation would have occured had Saddam died of natural causes as well. Iran would have outright invaded if that had happened. Talk about worst case scenario.

It's already a one stop shop for those things, take the guy's daughter as your wife and you get the camel a RPG as part of the dowry...

Saudi could use some more coastline though. A little northern shore...I can se it now "the Ithsmus of Kuwait" the "Israeli Penninsula" Turn Lake Thar Thar into the Gulf of Thar Thar.
