Pitbulls......

Recommended Posts

So I saw a story on my local news tonight that made me kind of mad.....

http://www.wftv.com/video/11273875/index.html

I truly wonder if the problem would have made the news if the neighbor had a rotweiller or maybe a german shepherd. I also may be a little biased because I am a fan of pitbulls and have helped raise my brothers pitbull.

add your thoughts or opinions and also pics of your pits if you have them....

i always thought of the problem with people attacked by pitbulls as a training problem. it's not like all the pitbulls will attack at some time during their life.

nice dog :fing34:

otis is a bit tall.

anyway, pits have a natural aggression towards other dogs/ animals. they are actually bred to be very people friendly. it's the owner's who turn the natural aggression/confidence towards people, as pits want nothing more then to please their owner.

also, all dogs have a natural want to hunt/ kill. it's a instilled trait from thousands of years before domestication. and even after. my akita has killed at least 12 cats, two squirrels, and one small deer. my 4 pit bulls have zero kills. just for comparison.

however, in this case, letting your dogs run loose, regardless of breed, but especially critical if they are pits, is irresponsible. they will hunt and kill. the owner of those dogs isn't doing himself any favors by not responding either. take this with a grain of salt as this computer as no sound, so i didn't get to hear the story.

i'll post pics of my dogs later.

pitbulls are a sore subject in the uk

there was a law set in the 80's that all pitbulls had to be castrated and mussled (sp)when out of the house, they also had to be registered, in tern this would lead to pitbulls being wiped out so today in the uk there should not be 1 pitbull left

at the same time all pitbulls in Northern Ireland were terminated due to breeding for fighting, and this was huge so they are totally banned over there

however back in the uk a baby was savaged and died a few weeks back, this is not an uncommon case recently and the police set up an amnesty, people had 4 weeks to get the dogs registered and get the snip, they also had to be chipped, all remaining dogs after this period would be destroyed, and indeed they did lots of raids on illegal breeders ect

my personal opinion is its not a dog i would own and i dont see why people do own them when there are much better family dogs out there, but hey thats my opinion and people will have a different view

maybe there more aggressive over here due to the bad weather :ughdunno:

i don't believe in aggressive breeds of dogs, i believe it's 100% due to their owners.

I like them.

ALL Dogs can be agressive. Yes some like some people are more prone to violence but positive influence, a safe good environment and plenty of training and ANY dog can be a house dog.

I think it's really in the training, but there are some dogs that are more agressive-as are people. I think many smaller breeds are more prone to bite or have mean tendancies, but they aren't as largely reported since there isn't as much damage to the person if an ankle-biter nips you.

I have a border collie/lab mix that's very well trained, and theyr'e known to be good family dogs. She's as sweet as can be, but I trained her to bark at and chase strangers-as when I first moved here I was living w/ my parents and the house was broken into 3 times, and the sheds were broken into 4. Between everything that was stolen we lost well over $30,000 worth of antiques, electronics, and tools.

My parents have some rental property I do the work on for them, and I have a maintenance business, so they not only took some of my parents stuff, they stole my tools and therefor my means of making $, which is so low I would kill them myself and call it justice if I caught them.</rant>

I think that dogs just do what they are trained to, or aren't trainted not to. watch supernanny- the kids do what they want because the parents don't do what they need to, and the owner/pet relationship is the same.

My thoughts on that.

to barnie...

in reality, pit bulls are breed to be very human friendly. why? due to the fact that they are used as fighting dogs, handlers don't want bit when they have to seperate a pair. it's not in the dog's nature to be aggressive towards humans, but rather it is to be towards other animals. due to this, it's not hard to turn one onto humans, especially since pits really want nothing more then to please their owners. in the right hands, a person can't ask for a better dog. they are even making it into police/rescue work as they will work to their death to do as their master asks.

it is owners, not dogs, that create the issues with pits. like all things, the occasional bad apple does happen. but for the most part, pits are some of the most loyal, loving and protective dogs one can own.

yes, i'm biased. tonight, i pick up another male. owned by a cop, and a brother to my primary male, he is only letting him go due to the fact he's becoming a K9 officer and he can't own any other animals. my kennel will have three breeding males, two breeding females, and one non-breeding male.

lol, not quite matt. one male, samson, will be studded out only. he's double registered, and none of my females are. so that kinda cheapens the breeding. now, my other two males, magnum (primary) and felony (full brothers, different litters) will eventually be double registered, but will breed in the yard with cora and queenie, who are only adba registered.

samson might eventually get a female of his own, if the right double registered bitch comes along.
