So my alternator is hosed

Recommended Posts

Haha just kidding Mark, but my alternator took a dump today.

I was driving along, tunes cranked all the way, and then I notice that I'm getting a lot more voltage drop on my voltmeter... kinda cool until my amps shutdown cuz the voltage dropped below 11 on the beats :ughdunno:

Long story short, it doesnt charge much at idle, and I'm hearing a whining noise coming from the alternator.

I'll be taking it in on Wednesday to get it rebuilt and see what actually fried.

I should be able to make it to work and back tommorrow with it, unless I can bamboozle my dad into driving me, which I doubt.

I feel your pain. I went through 5 alternators and 5 batteries in 5 years. I was almost ready to blow my frickin car up I was getting so pissed. I finally ditched the rebuilds for a new lifetime warranty alternator, through a red top in and.....knock on wood....its been a year and a bit.

But now I have no voltage drop at all! No matter how loud I play it.

Nope I've had the big 3 forever, but I actually just upgraded my amp grounds this weekend.

Instead of dropping from 14.4 to ~12.4, I was only dropping down to ~13.6, and I could definetly hear it through the subs too, I'm positive they got a bit louder. At least it felt like it.

Puggsley, hopefully I dont end up with a track record like yours! hehe.

Suck it up and buy a new one! :P

Sorry to hear that - I DESPISE car repairs in any form, simply because everytime I took my old Lumina into the garage for something minor, it ended up costing me over $1000. This was EVERYTIME...

I know, I know..... :nopity:

Alts can sure get expensive too...

This one was actually rebuilt about 6 months ago, that's the crappy part.

I do all of my own car work, for the most part, so this is only gonna cost me ~$80, but it's still $80 I really dont want to spend on this.... need to buy summer tires very soon.

Stock ~80amp capacity alternator BTW.

So I got it rebuilt, for $20 I might add ;) , and it looks like it's sitting at a pinch more voltage, both while idling, and while bumping :D

Here's to hoping for 148db's :)

Not bad at all.

I kinda know the guy, so that's why it was so cheap. It was either $80 or $100 the first time.

It's just a PITA to get the alternator in and out of the car is all.
