JBL's not working right

Recommended Posts

I was listening to stereo pretty loud last night and every thing was fine. i went to leave today and i notice my rear side speakers were not working right. They are JBl 2 way 6x9 GTO 's. they came with the truck from the previous owner. They are rated at 150 watts. i had a 2 channel MTX 280 watt amp hooked up to them running at about half turned up. Now only the tweeter or the little spekear in the center of it is working. All i here is the highs and no mids. I checked all the connections and even hooked it back up to the head unit and still the same result. The fronts are just off the head unit and they are fine. I don't know what i did?? They sounded great. For not buying them.

soudns like you blew the mids, if all connections are good. let me add this...have you checked the coils with a meter? if not, you need too, just to make sure...

time for new speakers..

Depends. If the coil burnt and broke somewhere it would be an open reading, meaning Zero, or close to it. Coil could have also come unwound or moved in the gap which will give you a different reading in either direction.

well.. if the coil was broken, and a complete open, then it would read a big OD or OV on the ohmmeter, or something in the Megaohms since their will be no resistance at all.

If the coil is shorted, then you would get 0ohms. Anything lower than say 3ohms on a 4 ohm impedance coil would be considered blown.

Well, not necessarily. ;)

A 6.5" may be able to excurt further than a 6x9 when looking at similar surrounds, but most widely manufactured 6x9's will be quite suitable. Cone shape has very little to do with distortion; it is still predominantly about the suspension and motor.

Cheers,

Neil
