Sub firing in SUV

Recommended Posts

I am working on an SQ-oriented install and am trying to figure out where I want everything laid out. Anyway, is there any major drawback someone can come up with if I were to fire the subs up (sealed box)?

I know the only true way to find out is to try it and see, but the box dimensions will be different depending on the direction (an I don't have time to build 2-4 boxes and find out).

Any quick tips or ideas are greatly appreciated.

ML

In my explorer, rear firing has better low end extension and a smoother rool off. Upward firing provides a serious boost in output but the low lows are not as strong, and driverside firing seems to be a semi mix of the two. But most will say rear fire is the best bet.

I had an idea that was going to be the case. Why can't chit work out the easy way

rear fire, make the box tall and shaped like this IIII\ with the subs in the \ part. you will need to fiddle with the height a bit, but you will gain a somewhat horn loaded design and a VERY efficient listening area.

That's interesting, can you describe more on that design? I'm looking to change mine soon in my Jeep.

rear firing for SQ hands down in every install I've seen.

CRX style if you are going ported, however.

basicly what you are sescribing is a sloped baffle sealed box correct? with the sub mounted on the slope. almost prefab in basic design.

my question is this, how does that make for a horn loaded design? and how does it make it efficient?

Close but not cigar. It works in....

It doesnt even work in theory.

If you where going to do that the chamber volume of hte enlcosure would have to be as small as possible (what a true horn chamber is, very small).

The box would also have to extend end to end of the cargo area and you would have to do some serious measurments/calculations for it to work even halfway correctly.

On top of that, unless you have a damn Suburban the size of the "horn" would not be large enough to extend down to 20Hz in Horn Theory/Rule of thumb.

edit: n/m, not even worth it.

Not even worth it? YOU just claimed to be able to turn a SUV into a horn loaded enclosure simply by playing with enclosure height and slant.

Proof/Back it up in thoery or :ban2::)

the design he was talking about is similar to a front loaded horn. google the decware imperial horn (that's a blh, but there's a flh that's similar in size). check the size and tell me if it compares to the interior space of an suv ?

and you don't 'need' a 20hz horn to be able to reproduce 20hz in a car. cabin gain helps.

don't jump on people coming up with new theories.

Im interested in how he thinks it works.

Building a horn from scratch is a lot different than building an SUV into one.

and STFU elderado. I never claimed to know anything...I'm curious as if this can even remotely work.

chris calm down..you too elias...

simply put, chris, your first reply made it out to be like what was suggested wasn't even remotely possible..but until you've tested it, how do you know it won't "act" like a flh?

personally, i think he's on to something because if you look at the majority of all prefabs, wht shape do they take? a sloped front. is it design or necessity?

also, i won't get into if it will or if it won't too much as i know little about horn enclosures and how they work. but i enjoy reading someone's ideas or thoughts on how a particular box/setup could act.
