some quick thoughts....

1) this is a great looking amp! the problem would be how to install it, lol. i mean, rightside up and you can't see the internals. upside down and you can't see the nicely done case/heatsink. talk about a dilemma.

2)the set screws are entirely way too close to the case. it would be nice to see them just a bit further away, not much, but you can already see rubmarks on the case from previous installs.

3) a subsonic filter on a stereo amplifier? nice touch! it would be even sweeter if it was adjustable instead of just on or off.

4) the bridging is reversed. instead of L+ and R-, it's R+ and L-, which meant i had it hooked up wrong and had to refer to the owner's manual when it gave no sound..lol....oops, my bad! hehehe

ok, so far, it's nice. i can't tell adifference in sound, but that's because it's on sub duty. it is doing a nice job though, pushing the 12" LA sub quite nicely.it's performing more like a 500 watt amp instead of a 300 watter. i am going to see if i can't throw it in scott's escalade tomorrow and run it on some memphis m-class coaxils.

that's all for now, except, when do the tubes glow???

well, it goes like this....

after looking at the amp for awhile now...i'd definitely install it rightside up, with a mirror underneath. that way one could see the beauty all the way around.

performance was nice. pushed both sub and mids/tweets the way an amp should. never really got hot and just kept going. performs much stronger then it's rated, at least by ear.

sound quality, well, as we knew, that's subjective. on the sub, it was flawless. on the mids, i had a low volume hiss that never went away and never got any louder. jim was saying that lower sensivity speakers probably wouldn't pick it up, and you had to be right on top of the ones i used to hear it anyway. after that, this thing is pretty damn clean. definitely a sweet product.

thanks for letting me play with it. i'm impressed. the build quality is old school us amps, teh performance is the same! i actually like the look better. defintely something i'd recommend.

it did seem to have more of an "affect" on the sound when on mids/highs. i want to say it's kinda of a "fuzzy" sound, not really distortion, but you know there is something in the sound. makes it sound "old". what's cool was i was able to compare it to a SS home system...same speakers, different enviroments. the SS was much crisper, but not necessarly a better sound. the tweets weren't nearly as harsh on the tu300c as they are with the SS jvc bookshelf. the mids are nice with both...the tu300c is definitely alot more power, even though his bookshelf is rated the same. really shoved those dayton's around, as well as the LA sub (tc9 based driver). really, really performed like a much bigger amp.

so did i like it? yep!

I realize that I never gave a review.

I ran the amp in the M5 for a few days replacing my PG M44 on my mids. I have the M44 running about 150w to them, the tu300 had no problems keeping up. Sonically it seemed to be more live and full, maybe less brutal but the Seas Excels themselves are pretty brutal themselves. It was very clean and I felt it had a better attack. It gave me a feeling of a better reproduction of live performance--maybe the warmth described above--as I felt like the stage improved. It is a bit hard to compare since running back to back tests wasn't super quick, but there was definetely nothing un-enjoyable about the sound. I didn't notice any more noise like Kent, but I do have a small ground loop buzz that appeared in my system recently anyway that I haven't had time to track down with the other projects I have been working on. Bottom line if you offered to trade me for the M44 I'd take it for sure. Thumbs up on this one. I do wish I would have taken the time to run my tweets off it as I think it would have actually laid down the D2904's to make them more enjoyable. Perhaps it is my aiming, but they almost come to life too much and I think the live sound from the tu300 would have been a great fit for them albeit way more power than necessary.

they are simply markd on the case at the set screws, nothing damaging. i think they will rub off, just too lazy to try.

as to the 300c running your tweets, yeah, it would have settled them down for sure. it did in my case...they sounded much warmer, less harsh off the 300c then they do in thier daily enviroment.

Even orded harmonics are often introduced into the signal. HUman ears are pleased by even ordered harmonics, makes it sound "warm" or "old."

Old only because tubes where the time before solid state (obviously).

The warm, fuzzy sound of tubes is what tube lovers love. Ive heard tube amps that sound no different than solid state amps but then you may as well save and buy a solid state amp if you dont want the tube sound.

Solid state amps can sound "harsh" because solid state componets can introduce odd ordered harmonics into the signal...displeasing to the ear.

jim..listened to everything in the trailblazer's 6 disc changer....

eminem, chingy, 3 doors down, def lepperd, sir mix alot and a bass cd. i also listened to the local rock station...
