RL-s ? and a RL-i ?

Recommended Posts

1st

Would 800wrms be ok for a RL-s 12" sub in a sealed box at 2cu. I would like to try one out but not sure if I have the power.

2nd

RL-i 8s I have them in my car now in a .4cu each sealed they sound real nice. I miss the overpowering bass of the RL-p12 ported. I do like the sound of these sealed . I would like to know what you think the most power they could handle in a seal box. I like the little room they take up. I was thinking about getting a bigger amp for them. right now they are getting 400wrms each do you think they could take 600-700 each or is this not a good idea.

Thanks for your help.

Mike J

I have not tested the RL-s yet, but I believe that 2 cubes might be a little small for it.

2 cubes sealed too small for a single 12? space hungry much?

2 cubes sealed would be the absolute minimum I believe.

Marketed as a medium to large sealed box driver, that's for sure.

So you guys dont think when Mike says Min.2cu that still would be to low. Well then I might try and buy a sundown 1500d amp and see how the RL-i 8s can handle close to 600watts and I hope they dont blow :wackit2:

They won't blow if you set the gains right and don't crank the volume full tilt all day long...

2 cubes on the RL-s12 would be fine.. but the 800 watt power load would leave it a little hungry. If you can run an IB setup with 800 watts, you'd have some serious awesomeness.. but with a 2 cube sealed box, I would suggest a solid 1200 - 2000 watts.

The 600-700 watts on each RL-i8 is pushing it, though I've hit 'em with that much before without any problems naughty.gif.

Even so.. you need to be very careful if you do. Set your gain wrong/have a leaky box/boostin' your line in.. could all lead to a ruined speaker right quick.

Thanks Mike, I like how the 8s sound just wish I could get a little more out of them. If I got a bigger amp I would set the gains with a meter to play it safe. I dont want to kill them they are to nice to F. up and if you remember it was not to easy for you to get me the pair.

Well I am going to think about it for a few days.

Remember that if you play it slow and move up step by step, the speaker will tell you if it isn't liking the power. That aluminum cone is heatsinked right into the coil - so a practical way to judge how much of the thermal coil capacity you are using is simply to feel the cone of the driver after you've been giving it a workout. Warm is OK, but if it gets too warm/hot, then you're headin' towards trouble. Combine that technique alongside listening for any non-linear excursion / rubbing, and you should be able to maximize the power fairly safely. Just take it slow!

Only aluminum cones. It also hurts your fingers

makes a nice "TINK" sound on your fingernails...lol...

i've thrown 1700wrms at my rl-i 8 in 1.25ft^3 ported..muhahahahaha

didn't like it very much, but it took it like a champ...

living much easier these days...

and i second mike on the box size/power thing for the rl-s...2ft^3 sealed for a 12 would work nicely..with at least 1200wrms.

it also likes 2.5ft^3 ported with 32in^2 of port tuned to 28hz...AND you could get away with the lesser power a bit easier...

wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :slayer:

ehh nothing I can do about it now, I love them and they have taken a beating, put the 2500D on them a efw times and they have held, bottomed out a few times but still held, not bad for a sub getting 2.5 times its rms during peaks

they are just great 10's I will never get rid of
