single cab blow through

Recommended Posts

hello all! I have a 99 single cab Silverado. I'm wanting to put my 15" BTL N2 in the truck but i've never done a blow through. my concerns are how big to cut the hole out through the cab, should I make it as big as the box? or can I get away with having a smaller hole (only a few inches smaller) I have another BTL that needs to be reconed but, I don't have a amp that can push them both. so for now I want to just put this one in. would a 4th order be a good design or just a slot ported box work better (I'm not a fan of aero ports)

If you are not keen on cutting a huge hole then a bandpass enclosure would be a good route.

  • if you have room in the bed of the truck for a large box then use both subs. an extra 3db is noticeable.

no such thing as underpowering

bandpass would be ideal for keeping the blow through cut small

port shape doesn't make a difference assuming the box was designed correctly

I've done some measuring and such. it looks like the box is going to be taller than im able to cut out. im not concerned with the size of the hole being cut out just never built a blow through. will the seat being closer change the tuning frequencies? I cant fold down the middle section of the seat so the seat will always be "up" im also not trying to break records just trying to get loud! the reason im not planning on doing both yet is, I don't have the electrical to support power to both subs. and I don't want to wait for a recone lol

Listen to lithium, you don't have to have a certain amount of power.

For a pair of BTL 15s a pair of 8" PVC pipes would be enough cross sectional area to more than likely give you low compression, only require you to cut a pair of 8" holes and be impervious to weather between your cab and bed.  Only a suggestion, of course...

2 BTL 15s wil be louder and have lower distortion on as little as 100 watts versus a single one...

You need to model to see what your options are.  Make sure those subs don't have any weird response variations in a 4th order bandpass also, I have no idea what their T/S parameters are...

I've never built a 4th order before. I plan on doing the second one in the future , just not right now. im the type of person to want everything right (meaning enough power for both) it doesn't bother me that the hole will be big, and sealing it will be easy. im not sure about the seat being close to the opening of the box. do you think it will load up on the back seat, or do you think it will be fine?

thanks for yalls answers! I'm not a pro, just love building things!

I still think your missing our point, you have enough power for both.  If you are going to do 2 of them, do it from the start and don't waste your money.

well I guess I better order a recone lol. I wonder what the turn around time on a Fi btl N2 is? with just them sending the parts to me

Before you decide on anything, you should probably see how those subs will behave in your planned alignment.

If you have the time, pick up the Loudspeaker Design Cookbook.  First few chapters will get you squared away.

Down where the port will be coming in is probably farther away from the seat than at the top

well I still need to get my other sub reconed! I'm not planning a 4th order just a simple slot port box!

I've done a blow through setup to several of those trucks ...

I think the height of the blow through from the bottom of the bed to the top of your cab line is only about 10 inches or so ... can't remember exact, but close ...

I think you can go as wide a 49 inches depending on if you have a fleetside bed or a stepside bed ...

If it's a stepside bed ... just cut out the width of your bed less than 2 inches on each side and you should be good ...

From what I've seen ... cutting the largest blow through hole, the better ... And it's always best if you have some sort of bed cover for your truck, especially if you plan to have your amplifiers and extra batteries back there ...

I've seen guys use bedliner material and not use bed covers ... but the problem with this is that when you need to go back in for repairs and upgrades ... you can't because you've sealed everything ... Not good because I do not think you can squeeze those huge drivers through the blow through hole and could be VERY uncomfortable getting yourself through there and secure the drivers down properly ...

Please remember this ... When cutting your blow through, make rounded corners so your accordian boot will completely seal between your bed and cab ...

Now when you build your enclosure for 1 or 2 15s ... It can be a basic ported and tuned enclosure. I usually set them up around 40 htz ... Then you have to make a mouth opening from the front of your enclosure through the blow through hole and into the cabin area ... So when you have your seat all the way back (like most tall people like me) your tuning should come out right ...

... And just about guaranteed to beat you and your significant other's brains in going down the road ...

With your finderwells, small blow through port opening, and bedcover installed ... you shouldn't have to worry about your enclosure moving much ... But I'd advise bolting that sucker dowm where ever you can ...

Oh yea ... Bolt down and not completely seal your top mouth end of your enclosure because you will most likely have to get back in there for driver / woofer reapairs and such ...

I have pics of my blow through enclosure if you would like to see them, but it was set up as a below the cabin window line wall with 4 isoberic 10s installed ... Almost the same, but different ...

Please keep in mind that this is all just my suggestions here based on several trials, errors, and sucess builds in the past ...

How ever you decide to go with this ... Best of luck Sir !!!

I'm tuned in for the build !!!

I would love to see some pics of the setups you've done if you have a link or anything it would help me out a lot!

Dang ... Now that's a Low Rider !!!

Never got that low with mine ...

But like I said ... We were working on it until We went and got me a new toy.

Yea, looks like you are very limited on leg room too ... So building a Cut through would help you out a lot there !!!

Perhaps a below the window line wall like mine ...

image_url-43297-1304688615.jpg

But then again ... ALOT of measuring would need to be done ...

LOL, I had bought a pair of those in the early 90s...  Were those the Isobaric or Trisobaric ones?

They went into the rear deck of Camaro Berlinetta, lol...

A pair of Iso-Kit 10s tuned to 24 htz on a Modified LP5002IQ (at the time of that pic) ...

Camaro Berlinetta huh ... I had a 1983 Camaro Berlinetta I drove to college ...

Then I had a 1985 IROC after that ...

You just made my day with that picture, BTW...

Thank You Sir ...

Next time you go to a MECA competition and meet up wit Steve Stern (owner of MECA) ... Take a look at what he is running in his Van for a Sub Stage ... An origional Trisoberic 10" enclosure

Wow, that was a while ago.  Camaro was a 79', poop brown...  I want to say power was a Soundstream D200...  Or a Punch 75...

Do you remember the Coustic "Bass Pump" around the same time?

I was buying Hollywood Sound Lab, McCauley and Pyle drivers back then.  Good times...
