upgrading component woofer?

Recommended Posts

i have a set of Polk dxi 6.5 components in the front doors of my truck. I really dig the tweets and over all they sound pretty good. ive done a fair amount of deadening and sealing of the doors. They are being powered bye a jl xd400/4 gettin about 75 watts rms. Would it be worth a shot to upgrade the woofers with some thing with a little more extension? Mid bass isnt bad for what they are now,but could be better! is there any limitation of the woofer through the passive xover or does it just block bass from the tweets? An active setup is my ultimate goal so purchasing a better mid woofer is not a bad idea anyway. just wondering if anyone has upgraded a component woofer..

You'd then need a 4 channel amp and an active crossover for the fronts. One channel per tweet and one per mid.

Other option is to improve the install. Midbass is very related to how well you've "fixed" your doors.

I would also verify you aren't artificially crossing over the system removing the midbass, pretty common as well.

what do you mean by artificially crossing over the system, M5? i have a 4 channel thats driving them now and my head unit is capable of the "active" portion. going active is soon to happen. justwanna dial in what i have now before beginning the next phase of the build.

If you said 130Hz you'd have found your artificial problem. If you didn't set your hp by listening for stress and making sure it was necessary, I would reset it. If they are at their wits end on the low stuff and that is what you want to improve it is a bit different than if you think you are lacking at 300Hz. Tightening up your doors via deadening, mlv, structure, mass, baffles all helps a ton.

I could probably cross them a bit lower with a steeper slope but they are pretty safe where they are.. Wish i knew someone who does glass work locally as id drop another set of 6 n a halfs in the doors.. Whatta you suggest for deadener? The doors are sealed and dynamatted around the driver but i want to deaden the inner and outter skin.. Secondskin? Murdermatt? What do you sugest for mass?
