Walling a vehicle 101 - any suggestions?

Recommended Posts

Upon further inspection, my fifteens were abused by the previous owner, and only have one functioning coil each, so i'll be replacing then much sooner than expected. I am still not completely decided on a course of action, but I thought I would ask some questions about walls before I wrote it off as too difficult.

First one, I know the weight will lower mileage significantly, which isn't cool, but I live within four miles of all my main destinations, so it's not too bad. Will the weight of a wall enclosure require attention to the suspension?

to be honest, i'm not entirely sure what kinds of questions to ask, so any advice from those of you experienced with such enclosures would be greatly appreciated

For a daily driver I wouldn't recommend it.

That's my opinion.

Not a good effort/return ratio?

When I walled the PT, the wall itself wasn't the issue.

It's the 6 80Lbs batteries, 2 70Lbs Subs, 150'+ of 1/0. All that ontop the wall itself dropped my MPG about 3 per gallon. I still got 22-23 with the wall.

If my new truck was deeper in the cab I'd wall it too, just don't have the room for now.

Looking at getting four Obsidians; if I were to wall it i'd go with eighteens, but in a regular enclosure, i'll just do fifteens, i'm not to sure I could do four eighteens ported in the space I have. As for why, I assume it would much easier to get loud with less space to pressurize. It's only for music though, i'm not after numbers. And of course the wow factor. I'm after some flex and vurred blision, low notes and a moderate amount of quality to go along with it.

even with all the suspension mods a wall sounds dangerous as fuck.

Dangerous? As in, higher chance of rolling the truck on a turn?

pictures of your truck would be nice to kind of see the quality of your suspension ...

Is it one of those 2 door blazers or 4 door ???

Its a four door trailblazer.

The suspension sucks on them. Soft coil springs to give you a car like ride.

Building a wall in a SUV is super easy, just make sure you make it atleast 2 layers of 1" all the way around and secure it to the floor of the truck. I always start with the floor, the roof, then the sides.

I can't find my usb for my phone to upload pictures, so i'll post a link to a similar one.

It's buried in the garage, I'll try to dig it up this week some time.

This one is even the same color.

I've built many daily driver walled vehicles.. Including my own. Regardless if its a wall or a box in the cargo area if unsecured its extremely dangerous.. I once saw I SUV get hit and throw around a 3cube box 100 feet. So  only thing I can say is secure it and make it a part of the truck.

It is always good to have a few box designs and builds under your belt before leaping into something extreme.

Pretty much the feeling I had; but you know me, I had to ask, I am a daydreamer.

As far as box design, I have one more question for this thread, I don't think it's enough to make a whole nother thread about,

Do the obsidians sound alright sealed? If so, I think I'd build a slightly oversized sealed box for them, and if it isn't enough, i'll put some aeroports in it. Also that way I could then mess with the tuning to find what sounds good in the truck.

If it was mine, I'd keep it below the window line ...

Try and keep it small and simple with like 4 12s with somewhere around a 40 htz tuning with adequate amp and electrical and you should be fine for a starter ground pounder system ... Subs back / ports back

Like Drew said ... The equipment is going to make up just as much of the weight anyways ...

Never used the Obsidian's. Of course any sub that is extremely good at being ported is not good at being sealed, so it pretty much depends on what sort of compromise they were designed with.

Figured i'd answer this one.

The Obsidian's are pretty overbuilt 2.5" coils that can sound very good in a sealed box. Everything you've heard about them taking gobs of power just isn't true for daily. You can burp high power to them all day long, but there is a reason Nic warranties and rates them @ 600 RMS. If you want them to get loud you will need to port them. If your intentions are to port your sealed box you made then make sure you build the sealed box big enough that when you add the port you remain with the ported spec when you add it on later.

I'll also add that I want to say the intentions of the Obsidian line were to take his home line and make it more car audio friendly. My opinion is he did an OK job and made something that doesn't break the bank, but it is still an entry level sub.
