Rear Speakers off Headunit? Advice Needed

Hello,



I am in the process of upgrading the audio system on my 2002 Maxima.   My setup is:


Rainbow CS 265 X-Plain Pro Component (Fronts)
Power (Peak=120W & RMS=80W) @ 4 Ohms

 

JBL GTO638 (3-Way) [Rears]
Power (Peak=180W & RMS=60W) @ 2 Ohms


2 Image Dynamics IDQ 10" subs
Power (Peak=500W & RMS=250W) @ 4 Ohms (Dual Coil)

 

Kenwood X997 Headunit
Power (Peak=50W & RMS=22W) @ 4 Ohms

ESX Quantum 604 (4 channel amp) for the speakers
Output Power at 12V:
4 x 60W @ 4 ohms
4 x 90W @ 2 ohms
2 x 180W @ 4 ohms bridged
2 x 75W @ 4 ohms bridged "TRUE MONO"
2 x 120W @ 2 ohms bridged "TRUE MONO"
2 x 180W @ 1 ohm bridged "TRUE MONO"


ESX Quantum 1752 for the subs
Output power at 12V:
2 x 175W @ 4 ohms
2 x 250W @ 2 ohms
1 x 500W @ 4 ohms bridge
1 x 200W @ 4 ohms bridge "TRUE MONO"
1 x 350W @ 2 ohms bridge "TRUE MONO"
1 x 460W @ 1 ohms bridge "TRUE MONO"
1 x 260W @ 4 ohms bridge "TRUE MONO/HI V"
1 x 450W @ 2 ohms bridge "TRUE MONO/HI V"

Questions:

1. Given that the Rainbow speakers are rated at 80W and the JBL 60W, are the ESXQ 60x4 amp powerful enough to handle all 4 of them?

2. Alternatively, would it be better to bridge the 4 channel into 2 channels (180W x 2) to run just the fronts?

3. I like rears fills, so I was thinking of using the Kenwood headunit's internal amp (rated atPeak=50W & RMS=22W) to run the JBLs (or the stock speakers - if the JBLs are considered too powerful for the headunit). Is this a recommendable approach?


My interest is in good "SQL", and would appreciate any thoughts and advice.

I would bridge the 60.4 and run just the fronts. It is personal preference though. If you like rear fill so be it. The 60.4 puts out considerably more than 60 watts per channel. More like 100.

Thanks very much, Ou812:  Yes, I am inclined to bridge them 60.4  but for some reason, I like to have some rears, so long as they don't overpower the fronts. 

 

I will take some pictures and post them around.  and congrats for having the 120.4 & 275.2.  Those are real nice.

You can do a few different things. Run the 60.4 in 4 channel mode to the Rainbows and JBL's. Keep in mind that the JBL's will get a tad bit more power being 2 ohms but not much. You can bridge the 60.4 to the rainbows and then you would have to run the factory speakers in the rear assuming they're 4 ohms. Since the JBL are 2 ohms I wouldn't suggest running them off hu power. Odds are that the hu amp will shut down. What I would suggest doing is......Use the 60.4 to run the rainbows active meaning 2 channels for tweets and 2 channels for the mids.  That would involve ditching the passive crossover and opening another can of worms though.

 

        I do have a few questions.....Do you have these amps up and running yet? Do you have the manual for them? If you don't here is the download for it. You'll want to read the manual very carefully before you power them up. http://www.esxaudio.de/manuals/discontinued/Q752-4752.pdf

 

The other question is where did you get the amps from? I have a friend in South jersey that has the largest collection of ESX amps I have ever seen and I am wondering if he is where these came from.

M5:  with such a beautiful lady adorning your signature, is your statement - dialing in fronts and forgetting about rears - meant to be be taken literally or figuratively ..... just thinking :-)

OY:  Yes, I have the amps running ... (and do have a hard copy of the manuals, but the electronic one is even better).  Currently I am running the amps in my car and they are powering only the JBLs at the fronts - since I planned upgrading the rears, and therefore left the factory one's unconnected.  In fact, I can hardly notice the absence of rear speakers, so I am tempted to just forget about them, and use the amps just for the front.

OY: I got the amps years ago, while living in Canada.  I actually ordered them from ampmanaudio (somewhere in the US).  Does your friend happen to own / work at an Car Audio shop in Cherry Hill - near the mall? Small world. huh?
