Necromancy Audio Customs.

Recommended Posts

Some people probably think it's retarded, but I like picking up free or nearly free amplifiers, headunits, and subs that need some TLC and bringing back to life. Custom casing, engraving, etc. Not a business or anything, just a little hobby. If anyone is interested, I'll post some resurrections in this thread as time allows and as progress occurs.

Picked up a Soundstream Granite 120.4 with blown output transistors for the 3rd and 4th channel, so I'm going to swap those out sometime next week and then kinda figure out what I'm gonna do with it lol.

Also got a Zapco i-2100 that keeps going into protect, so I'll be working on that project too when I get a little time.

I have a POS Toxik Audio 120.2 that just had a bad cap, replaced, works fine now, probably going to give it to my dad.

Someone gave me a Pioneer DEH-P770MP yesterday that I really wouldn't mind bringing back, guts all checked out and she runs like a top except.... display is toast so I'll be keeping an eye out for a faceplate in decent condition. Was browsing eBay and too pricy for my blood, so I'll just be looking around for a possible dead unit that the faceplate might work.

Let me know if anyone has anything they want to get rid of. If I can afford shipping, I might scoop whatever you got just to get it out of the pile your wife keeps yelling at you about. My wife doesn't mind lol.

Nice ... Wish I had the patience to work on pc / audio boards.

Thanks for commenting bro, it really is just patience. I have pretty bad anxiety amongst other issues and I find that working on things like this really keep me sane. I just take my time and enjoy the experience and end result. Sometimes I waste time on lost causes but it doesn't bother me, just more experience. At the moment I'm searching for an Audiobahn A4125HCT. I know Audiobahn isn't anything amazing but I really love my A2300HCT and I'd like a matching 4 channel to customize. Good thing they BARELY fit in my oven for powdercoat lol.

The funny part is that I love the projects. Not interested in the business of it at all yet. I will at some point, but for now it's a fun little hobby. I'll end up trading stuff off like I always do. Get a new project, and trade again.

I always send my stuff to TIPS for repairs ...

My problem with the project I'm working on now is the low budget, lots that NEED to be done and not much time to do the work in to be somewhat ready by October ... Lol no pressure !!!

But you are correct in that while working on projects, it does ease your mind at times ...

I understand low budget lol. I think as soon as I fix the Granite, I'll try and trade it for something else and work my way up. It's a really nice piece I must admit. Very interesting design. I'll take some gut pics later and post them. The board itself is in three pieces with the output transistors mounted under the board against the heatsink cover. Let me know if you have anything you want to trade or dump bro.

Next time I go to Ray's, I will check his pile of "un repairable" amplifier boards for that particular amplifier.

May can at least come up with some parts for ya ...

I remember seeing Audiobahn amplifiers there ... Just not sure of the models.

I think he is going to Lebanon, Tn this weekend for a MECA event, so I will get by there as soon as he has free time ...

Rock on. Thanks man.

Edit: You can usually tell the HCT models because they have the large dial meters on top instead of the digital one.

Edit x2: Also let me know if you ever see a faceplate for a DEH-770MP floating around. The pic above is what it looks like. ninja.gif

If I find one, you can have it for a couple bones or a trade bro. I'd rather find a 710BT or an 880PRS so it's all up for grabs. Lol. My only actual plans are a pair of IA Death Penalties in the trunk of my Cadillac ported via Aero through the rear deck running off the 2300HCT and front stage on a 4215HCT when I find one. Besides those parts, anything I have I'm willing to separate with. They're all just projects that will come and go.

Shit man, there is absolutely nothing wrong with what you are doing! Not "Retarded" at all!  A lot of us wish we had the skills to do what you are doing.  I'm an 'old school' dude who is way past the name brand amp game....I use what I like and prefer the older amps anyway. A lot of my favs are no longer functional. I win then! Put a little TLC back into them and reap the reward.  I've had some luck in the past winning that good 'ol ebay auction for the "non-working - parts" amp & bringing it back to life on the CHEAP.  Do us a favor, keep posting up your projects here so we can enjoy your finds.  Thanks for sharing your passions with all of us.

Sure man. Currently kinda screwed on money and I need some new equipment. Someone managed to get into my SUV and take my toolbox including my soldering station, my MM2000 DMM, and wire strippers, etc. My tool box was hidden under some clothes in the back and I'm assuming someone saw me bringing in a bunch of amps to my house the other day, and figured there was more in the car. Sucks, so... I guess everything is on hold until I can get ahold of some random tools.

Fucking thieves!!!!!

I really liked the Granite amps.  Had a 5 channel in my old man's Mustang about 15 years ago and it rocked that car,

Just an update. I cracked the Zapco and it's a mess. It was on a boat and it looks like it took a lot of vibration. Rattled itself apart. Gonna need about 10 new resistors and a lot of solder time. Oh well. It'll be a nice little amp when I can identify these and replace them.

Zapco's entry level amp was not too bad. It's a nice amplifier but the solder inside was crap. Ended up resoldering a lot. You can see one of the resistors missing in the gut pic. It completely broke off, and 3 more have one leg contact. Guess I know why it was just sitting in protect when it got any power. Anyway, fixed em all and she works fine now.

Dude u should talk to Mark about getting a section on here. A lot of us have amps that need work at reasonable/cheap pricing.

Hell once my stuff gets out of shipping I've got a Kicker I'll send your way for a project.

Well I wasn't really trying to make a transaction, just seein' if anyone needed it. I really don't care much about money (though I probably should, broke and baby on the way). Either way, I can get most common amp schematics through my work. I don't know if I'd need my own section though haha.

Couple of questions for you guys though. Anyone have any experience with American Bass Amplifiers? I've been looking at the PH4000MD and it seems like a decent amp and I can get two of them for around $750 total. Any info?

Oh and the POS Toxik Audio amp is currently running an Image Dynamics ID12v3.D4. My dad wanted something fairly low power and inexpensive. I'm actually fairly surprised by how it performs. I'll post pics as soon as the pics hit my inbox. 4G doesn't seem as fast as it pretends to be...

There could be a market for this. Maybe start doing some cosmetic features too?

Yea I can do plenty cosmetically. Only problem there is worth... I have an Audiobahn A2300HCT that's a pretty cool amp. 1200x2 @ 1Ohm or bridgeable for 2400x1 @ 1Ohm. Seems like an easy enough thing to customize but not sure if it's worth it. Was going to powder coat it black, create a new plexi cover with a much larger and quieter fan. Not sure if I'm going to do it now though as a few people have said the amp is crap lol, seems fine to me.

Anyway, I'm always interested in fun things like that. If I'm going to buy an amp for my custom car, I'd like it to look just as cool as the car. I'll see what pans out. I have the amp on Craiglist locally and have had a few people interested, but being a little low balled.

Edit: Feel free to PM man if you have any ideas or interests. Maybe we can do something.

FINALLY, just got ahold of schematics for the Soundstream Granite 120.4. I'll probably get started on repairing it and upgrading parts. As soon as I've got it apart, I'll strip it and have my tattoo artist buddy start custom painting it, everything from a new logo and all the adjustment markings.

Zapco traded for a Diamond Audio Technology D5 300.4 in pretty decent condition. Might redo the body but I'm still trying to come up with a plan for it.
