Thinking About Getting An AR-15? Advice?

id look into the M&P-15s or Daniel's Defense. if your being talked out of 5.56 then .300 blk is pretty sweet. just a .308 cal in a 5.56 cutdown casing.

I'm not dead set on anything. I'm going to cabelas tomorrow morning to look up a bunch of differnent types of guns.

That is a bolt action. And it usually ruins the AR that it shoots from.

The 50 BMG does not fit through the AR-15 receiver.

I love the 5.56 low recoil. Many people underestimate the effectiveness of the 5.56, I have seen devastating ballistics from that round. I do plan here in the near future getting a 7.62x39 upper for hunting applications.

There are more than a few companies that build .50 BMG uppers for AR-15's.

 

It sounds like you just want a military gun that looks cool and that's fine I understand that but if you are really looking to shoot a lot and are going to be shooting only varmit I'd do a 22 AR as bullets will be 10 times cheaper.

That's the beauty of the AR-15. One .22 LR upper for plinking, one .223 upper for varmints, one 300 BLK upper for larger critters, etc. Just takes a couple of pins.

Yea, never said you could put a .50 bmg magazine in the lower just stating the wide variety of calibers that can be used on the AR platform.

The OP wanted opinions on the AR platform. It really looses it's basis of being an AR when using a completely non AR related upper to shoot rounds that often destroy the lower.

It doesn't feed the same, operate the same, or extract the same. The only similarities are the trigger set up. You could basically weld the magazine well shut and it would just be a poor trigger set up for a 50 BMG.

Not only do you have to make a descision of what manufacturer to buy an AR from, you also must decide if you want a direct impingement or gas pistion setup.  Do some research I could not tell you which one is better but i do love my S&W Direct imp rifle.

There are a myriad of options, doodads, and whatchamacallits when it comes to AR-15's. You'll definitely want to bone up before you pull the trigger (sorry) on one.

Had the chance to carry one of these. I've gotta say, I don't know how practical it is for hunting or target shooting. Ammo is expensive. They sure will put something down though. Stopping power is ridiculous.

Windham Weaponary is an excellent AR manufacturer, and I'm sure you'd be smiling ear to ear if you ever got to use one.

Richard Dyke founded the Bushmaster brand of AR's in Windham, Maine, and eventually sold the brand to a large conglomerate in 2006. The conglomerate shut down the factory in Maine and relocated production elsewhere. A lot of AR enthusiasts seem to agree the Bushmaster reputation for incredibly high quality product went to shit after the sell off. In 2011, Dyke bought the original Bushmaster plant and has started turning out AR using the same machines, same stock of metal, even some of the original employees, under the name Windham Weaponry.
