ArmaLite AR-15 is a selective fire assault rifle with available calibrations of .223 or 5.56mm. In Michigan, it is legal to hunt deer in the rifle zone with any caliber of firearm except a .22 caliber or smaller rim fire. In the shotgun zone of Michigan, you can hunt deer only when using a conventional smokeless powder handgun that must be .35 caliber or larger.

Looked up the hunting laws on Michigan.gov and my goodness are they strict.

In my country you cannot use or even carry any gun, any firearms !!!

People still have guns for hunting or competitions, but the biggest danger is burglars : they steal your guns in your house, to buy drug or commit armed robbery !

 

 

The fact that you can have guns and shoot is quite unbelievable.

Detroit has one of the strictest set of gun laws in the country, and since there is almost no crime in Detroit, you can really see how much of a great job these gun laws are doing. Way to go State Legislators!

It's so fun living in a far left state. Luckily our new governor has given me some hope.

I'd like to hunt rabbits and squirrels. Also I would use it to kill the raccoons and possumes that try to get into the chicken coops.

you'd be good with a 22 magnum or a .17 cal  I use Hornady v-max

You can use one , but check with your local laws. Just don't try to shoot a a deer with one!

Okk I don't want a start up a huge fight of where you can shoot and not. I can and have shot on my property for years. So that's not a concern of mine if I can or not. We will gut and cook our kills no matter what gun I will use. I am not going to use the .223 for deer hunting since it seems more ineffective compared to my shotgun. Also it would most likely just wound it and then lose it. If I feel the need to shoot deer with an AR-15 then I will get a new upper for a .308

Unfortunately an AR -15 cannot handle the .308 uppers. The reverse is also true unless someone recently made a new change. You basically can have a rifle that uses the bolt face from the .223 or the .308. Not both.

Does that make sense?

For the 1000 price range you could build a nice AR-15 or a better than average AR-10.

If you buy it outright and put together it would really exclude the AR-10 platform unless you find a screaming deal/used gun.

Again, if you are looking at the AR-15s any of the major brands would be fine. If you are interest in the larger AR-10 platform I would encourage you to use the DPMS styled lower. There are more options in bot magazines and parts in general. The Armalite is fine, but really much less supported.

To me, the only benefit of going with a .223 caliber is cheeeeeeeeeep bullits if you don't reload. They won't be accurate however. The larger AR-10 is more versatile but harder to find dirt cheep amp for.

If your ranges for shooting are more than 300 yards you would benefit from a .308 bolt face cartridge like a .260 or 6.5 CM.

Correct. The AR-10 is capable of handling .308 and all its wildcat cartridges: .243 Winchester, .260 Remington, 6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08 Remington, .338 Federal, and .358 Winchester.

There are plenty of large caliber alternatives for the AR-15 platform, including 6.8 SPC, 6.5 Grendel, 300 Blackout, .450 Bushmaster, .458 SOCOM, and .50 Beowulf.

If you hand load there's even the .20 Practical, which uses .223 brass necked down to fit a .204 bullet. Fits in standard AR-15 mags, too.
