Thinking About Getting An AR-15? Advice?

Do you need it? Then you must be trained and ready to use it in the right situation! I myself don't think you need it.

You don't need amps or speakers and might hurt yourself and others. Probably don't know how to properly calibrate them to the highest level of standards either so you shouldn't get them.

I am just saying what is he going to use it for and does it need to be a ar-15. Smaller calibers can do the same job.

The at cones in many calibers. Even 22. AR is just the style "frame"

This and what Peng said is what I couldn't understand. The AR platform isn't my ideal choice, but because of it's modular design and insane abundance of parts it is a good option.

Some of the best parts about AR platforms is you can go from semi auto to "bolt like action" by using an adjustable gas block.

Nice convertable option. When I get my AR-10 worked on I plan on getting a gas block for it and maybe a 6.5 CM upper. Something to match what ever bolt action I build.

In Michigan we are limited to use a ar rifle. Below M46 which is basicly the southern half of Michigan .Unless you are using it at a firing range! or are needing it for protection.If that is the case a pistol is a better choice. Edited June 3, 2013 by pmureika

What a bunch of horse shit. I carried an AR at a young age. Uncle Sam stuck one in my hand, with some proper training, they're a very enjoyable firearm. Ammunition is cheap, they're reliable, and parts are easily obtained. DPMS makes great entry level AR-15's.

 

Definitely take the advice given regarding lurking around the forums, tons of good information on there. A firearm is nothing but a tool in the hands of a responsible adult. What type of firearm it is makes absolutely no difference in its function. It is a tool and should be respected.

I chose to go with a Smith & Wesson M&P 15T.  Very happy with it so far it looks amazing and has had no trouble cycling many different brands of ammo.  Got mine with a 1 in 8 rifling twist to be vesatile with any grain 5.56 or .223 bullet.

That sounds dubious. I just read they opened up rifle areas for deer in southern Michigan. I don't know the details or if the law did pass, but it was JUST in the news.

Can you use it on you private land? In southern Michigan you can only use it at a rifle range.

That's the deal with the 2nd amendment. It states that you have the right to bear arms against state and country. But doesn't go into detail about what is deemed legal or not.

When those type guns have a one to two mile range. They can't be used in a city. I do have weapons I can use to defend myself. I am a gun rights advocate!

Hmmmm medically retiring after 10 years total service in the US Army, 2 combat tours and I know for damn sure a pellet gun or bow and arrow are not considered firearms.

Okk I don't want a start up a huge fight of where you can shoot and not. I can and have shot on my property for years. So that's not a concern of mine if I can or not. We will gut and cook our kills no matter what gun I will use. I am not going to use the .223 for deer hunting since it seems more ineffective compared to my shotgun. Also it would most likely just wound it and then lose it. If I feel the need to shoot deer with an AR-15 then I will get a new upper for a .308

I heard a lot of people don't use .223 with deer since it's not as powerful for dropping a deer as other calibers. That's why I would go up in caliber. I would use my shotgun first though.

Check your local laws but hunting south of M-46 you can't use a rifle.
