Advice for Ported Box

Total volume = 5.333 (1 inch MDF)

Port Volume = 0.64

Tune = 31hz

 

Box dimensions 

Total Box = 38 x 18 x 18

Port = 3 x 16 x 23

 

Is this a good design for a ported 15, or two ported 12s?
If not, what needs to change?

also, could the subs be mounted on the top? Would this effect quality or spl?

spoke too soon you're right that really cant be determined until the subs being used known.

This would be in the back of an SUV. Would the subs being on top be better?

I could raise the height of the box and extend the port to what ever I need.

2 12's will be louder on the same amp.

 

but i would suggest putting a little more thought into your build instead of what ever is louder. you can have subs sound good and be loud at the same time

Well yeah, of course I want it to sound good. I just want to be able to crank it up and get some good bass. Not competition or anything like that, but just some nice loud bass when I want it.

I just want to know if this box is good to use?

we have to know what sub/s are going in to know for sure. pick your sub/s first and then work on the box

design relates to product/subwoofers used .... you can get lucky or have decent output/sound quality using a random design for any sub but I wouldn't spend $300+ on anything and just go random on setup... but that's just me

Not sure what suv you have but how about 2 15 gcons? That would be way louder and sound just as good.

As for the subs... I understand I need to pick, bit for this box, would sa12s or gcons sound better?

Well of course the box needs to be bigger. What's your max dimensions you can/want to use.

 

For that box you came up with, I wouldn't put either of the pairs in that box. Your going to need a bigger port. How much, I don't know. I would have to get the specs of the subs.

 

I'm not really sure if you would hear much of a difference between the subs. Both are proven to be some badass subs.

Okay, so if both SA12 and Gcon 12s are both bad ass subs, il probably stick with sundown then. So 2 SA12s, in that ported box. I will make another model of it tonight.
How big of a port are we talking? 

I will also change the box dimensions to keep around 3-4 cubes of air because sundown recommends SA-12s get 1.5-2 cubes each.

This is another design of the same box. SAME outside dimensions. 

 

 

Total volume = 5.333 (1 inch MDF)

Port Volume = 1.37037

Tune = 31.5 hz

 

I made the port 4 inches in width and raised the length to where I had it tuned around 31.5 - 31.6 hz. Its now 4 x 16 x 37

You can't make a box without knowing the amount of port area you need. You can't just keep making sketchups and ask if they're good. Ill check and see how much port area it should have. How much power are you puttin to the sa12s?

okay, so im pretty bad at calculating that. I only know how to tell how many cubic feet I have. 
So can I convert that?
How close was I on my last design? (Last post on first page)

You should download the torres box calc. Type in google "torres box calc" and it's on the s m d forum. It's a very helpful tool. This way you can do it yourself and it'd be easier for you just to do it instead of asking and having to wait.

I had that once, didn't fully understand it. I'm afraid I won't know everything I'm looking at. Can I just get a conversion of 85 in2 to cubic feet?

That will be my last question, with that I can build my box.

well you said to use 80-90 in2 of port... i just want to know how many cubic feet that is. because right now my original design has .64 cubic feet, and the newer one i designed today uses 1.48 cubic feet.. I dont know how those numbers compare.

It's just how much the port takes up. When you download the calc it will tell you everything you need to know
