box bigger than optimal size

So I have an XCON 15 and im finally getting a ported box designed. Thing is the optimal size I'd 4 cubes ( could be wrong, I can't check right now) and the box I already designed is 5.5 cubes after subtracting all Displacements. Tuned to 31. Is this to much box for the sub? Will it bottom out?

It really doesn't need to be that big, you can't make it smaller? Although it's not that big of a deal. How much power were you planning on throwing at it?

Totally depends on power and the install. I would be very careful that far over optimal, BUT if you have low power it would be ok MAKE SURE YOUR SSF IS SET CORRECTLY. I cannot stress that enough. PLEASE PLEASE set your ssf correctly or end up in the noob boat with me after unloading your fantastic amazing subs like a noob because of ssf setting....

Lol well I have a Rockford fosgate amp so I'm stuck at 28hz. Oh and its a t1000 and birth sheet sais 1400rms at 1 ohm which is what its at.

The reason for the larger box is its gonna be an SPL box. But if it doesn't make a whole lot of a difference then I could get it switched over to the optimal size. I'm just a bit nervous going bigger than what they call for, hence why I'm asking around

Go with optimal then. If its a few tenths over dont stress it.

The bigger box will increase your efficiency, and in some cases increase your overall SPL potential.  Model and see the difference between 4 and 5.5 cubic feet.

 

Purposely building a box smaller to increase mechanical power handling is not only pointless, but can decrease overall output potential.

When u say module and see the difference what do u mean? On the computer or actually build the box and test them out?

That's beyond me. Wouldn't know were to start. This is why I'm having someone else design it for me. Maybe I'll just get him to make it 4.5 cubes or even 5. would that be better?

Honestly, you have to model to find out.  If you can't do this and interpret the results, stick to the recommended volumes and tuning.

 

Normally, there isn't too big.  You just get to the point of diminishing efficiency returns are more and more ripple in response if you tune in the same area.

I would do 4 ft3 net volume, to be safe : you'll love it ! You want spl but you tune so low ? I don't know anything in spl, but I thought it would be better to tune higher for this goal.

I think you can find cheap external ssf to plug into the rca on the amplifier.

 

5.5 is huge !!! Unless it is an 18" sub.

well like i said i have a fosgate amp that does not have a variable ssf and is stuck at 28hz. i know i can buy an external one but im fine with what it is
