wanting to build my first "sq" setup

Recommended Posts

I bet you'd never see me post this M5 haha

anyways, ill post what im looking to do and what im working with. its my daily driver, a 2011 ford flex, with the stock Sony system, SYNC, etc.

first up, HU. i dont want to replace the stock unit. its a good unit and i dont want to mess with an aftermarket one. theres a guy on the flex forum that runs a JBL MS8 with his stock unit and says its incredible.

budget wise, im not going to throw a number, but i will state that i am not going to be paying like 500+ per speaker or anything crazy. this is just a daily driver and even the cheapest of a "sq" setup will sound good to me, as i mainly use pro audio in my other rides. i do have a feeling however the a normal car audio speaker setup won't be loud enough for me, but i still want to try this out.

i do want it to be LOUD. but i want it to sound great as well. i have a stock 3.5" center speaker, ~1" stock A pillar tweeter pods, and 5x7 stock mids in the 4 doors. the rear D pillars each have a 3.5" speaker, but they are low powered and run mono, mainly for the third row. originally i wanted to replace them with larger louder speakers because i like rear fill, but i relized that im already going in the wrong direction for an SQ setup.

the first thing i will probably be doing is deadening. im not going crazy ripping this interior apart, ill probably start with the doors. the doors are HUGE on this thing. i have alot of depth. could virtually fit anything in them within reason.

i dont really want to have any speakers showing, i want it to all look stock. i would do kicks if i could but the kicks are weird in this car and its really not even an option. plus the e brake is in the way on the drivers side.

what other processors could i consider besides the MS8? preferably something cheaper if possible.

speaker wise, since im wanting to keep it stock looking, i was considering those Bravox mids. i would have done 6.5s but theyre sold out, so im considering ordering the 5x7s for the doors. not sure on carbon fiber/silk tweets, or the kevlar/aluminum tweets yet. im leaning towards the aluminum becuase i come from pro audio and bullet tweeters so i have a feeling silks will not make me happy. i know the stock system seems like it isn't "bright" enough for me even with the stock tweets maxed out.

the guy on the flex forum said after deadening his doors, and putting a fiberglass filler piece in the large holes on the door, it made a HUGE difference even with the stock speakers (he was running the MS8 and an aftermarket amp on the stock speakers for a while). he just installed the bravox carbon fiber 5x7 comps up front and the coax's out back and i believe is currently still tuning and breaking them in.

i dont have much room for subs either, well i do, but i want to be able to still fold the third row, and if any of you have seen how the third row in these cars folds down, a sub box in the cargo disables that option. i have a spare tire well that i think after glassing the enclosure gives me maybe 1.5 cubes, possibly less. he runs some shallow tens i believe. i dont want a huge SPL system but i deff want alot more bass than the stock 8" in the side panel delivers. i think he said he was able to get alot more bass out of the stock setup after adding the MS8.

ill end the post there and let some of you guys post some replies and see what you have to say. I still obviously have alot of questions and alot to learn becuase a "true sq" setup with a processor, center channel, etc has never been an interest of mine until now.

Thanks

Why do you think you want an sq setup? Sort of the same question....what does that mean to you?

And I assumed it would come someday just not so soon. In the late 80's I ran pro audio stuff for fronts and lots of subs. I grew out of that faze shortly thereafter

Idk. Just want to try it out. I dont want to cut up doors to put huge mids. Still a fan of pro audio. A sq setup most likely wont be loud enough for what I'm used to. But I'm willing to give it a try

Hell. Froze. Over.

All jokes aside...

Do you have anyone in the area with such a setup? It would be worth listening to such a system before you jump head-first into it, especially if you're not sure you will like it.

You still need to define what "sq" means to you. 99% of people who think they have/want "sq" truly do not. We can help you achieve what you are looking for, but first tell us what you want without using that term.

Exactly. Otherwise it'll fail. For instance my goals and yours are drastically different.

Ill have to post on my Florida forum and see if there's anyone.

I explained what I'm after in my first post. May not be a true sq setup to you guys, but it should still sound pretty good.
