Welcome to the IHoP v.2

Safety. Even if I had a chambered round in a semi automatic pistol I would most definantly keep it on safety when on my body. I can speak from personal experience that when I had that knife to my throat that I would not have been able to think correctly to take the gun off safety. And I have spent thousands of rounds and have killed hundreds of different animals in my day

If It wasn't legal to have one in the chamber I don't even know if i would carry. And I don't for the record. Not old enough. I open carry (with one in the chamber) sometimes when I'm hiking and such, but never as a means of personal defense against another human.

The last time I was mugged I knew damn well it was coming. Late night, walking from my buddies dorm to my car, saw the guy checking me out (no one else on the streets that late) and saw him follow me. I made myself an easy target; limping, alone, at night. Pulled a little revolver on me and asked for my wallet. Now I'm not saying things would have been better even if I had a gun on me. I couldn't draw unless I felt my life was endangered which wouldn't happen until i had a gun pointed at me already. But I knew he meant no good and having the feeling of not being able to do a damn thing about it was pretty shitty.

On the other hand, the last time my brother was mugged it was completely unexpected. So I see what you're saying.

Personally, I don't carry with the safety on either. If I'm going to draw it's because I will probably have to shoot something. I use to practice drawing a lot so that it's instinctual now to draw straight up so the barrel only points in the direction of a threat. For that reason I never have, and don't see myself ever carrying in the small of my back. Also would probably destroy my draw time; especially since I'm new to it.

Plus if you get a good IWB holster and have a reliable pistol I don't see how you would ever have an accidental discharge.

That's just me though. I would never do anything you aren't comfortable with when it comes to firearms though.

And speaking of guns, the whole Obama gun debate thing hit my little city HARD. With only 2 gun stores I can't even buy powder to reload locally let alone .45 ammo. The local guys went ape shit and bought almost everything.

But they did leave me a bunch of .303  :D

I respectfully disagree about the revolver thing J. I think revolvers are great but a singe stage trigger ,striker, auto loader is maybe the most simple firearm to USE.

Rack it and bang until no bangs. Then load next mag, tug slide and bang away some more.

Wheel guns handle recoil nicely, but are in truth much tougher to shoot. Not the least of which is a fucking looooooooooong trigger pul.

Just glide back the hammer before squeezing. Problem solved. I only suggest wheel because of the possibility of the magazine not being seated properly or of a jam. In home defense milliseconds are life seconds.

I love .45 personally too. I think it is a better caliber than 9mm, but in the thick of it, more rounds sometimes trump more thump.

Very true. I just know with the amount of crazed druggies that you find in AZ I'll take 15 rounds of .45 over 17 of 9mm any day.

J

My xdm holds 21-22 in standard non CA magazine for 9mm. :P
....what, mine is only 19+1???

I agree with J on the safety talk too. Modern autos have more safeties than even needed. And revolvers are a joke to reload. Even with a speed reloader

Many people love that judge too. I personally think it is not a good choice but it inspires a lot of confidence in the shooter and terrifies bad guys. I would be much more afraid of a person with a good working modern auto of any caliber.

Your right, I can't count. :D
I thought maybe I got shorted a few!
It's hard for me to count in class...

Jk govt agencies.

OMG ROFLMFAO BBQsawce

I agree with your point frosty the flake man!

Comfort is #1 when it comes to firearms. It's why I have learned to shut my mouth when helping people new to them. I can tell you all the data and science and how things do and should work. What ballistics are best for defense. How to handle a situation properly, and best methods and practices.

Flat out though, if you are not comfortable with a gun or style of carry all the facts in the world won't make up for our lack of confidence. I talked about that earlier with the popularity of the judge.

Balistically, it is one of the absolute worst defense guns. But if you are comfortable with it, then it makes a lot of sense. It is an intimidating weapon and capable of lethal damage. So is a 22, and I would rather have a 22 I felt I could drive properly than something I was nervous to shoot, or even worse, nothing at all. Somtimes that is more important than all the science in the world.

Also just because you carry doesn't mean you will choose to use it. I doubt I would try to pull my gun if I was within inches of someone who already had a gun on me and just wanted my wallet. But if I felt there was no way I could get out of it without taking a round I would rather have the chance to fight back than not.

Shit there were people who carried at some of the recent shootings, and they didn't feel like they had a reasonable shot and didn't fire back. Just because yoh carry doesn't mean every situation needs lethal force.

Funny you mention small of your back. I plan to get my carry permit soon and I will probably carry there. I'm a fat guy and it is a really easy to conceal place for me. On my hip is a little uncomfortable with my arthritis. Appendix is another option, but being a chubby guy it isn't really a good place.

When I loose weight though it might be the place.

Speaking of arthritis I just got back from trying out a new local gym.

3-6 months ago I was working towards benching 300 for reps. I was at about 270 for 8. Today, on a machine no less, I could barely push 150 for 6. I had to move it down to 130. I was doing rope push downs for my triceps with 120. I couldn't do more than 60. 90 dumbell for overhead tricep press was easy, now I used a 35 pounder..... so sad.

I am affraid to see how much my legs have lost.

I'm not a big fan of small of the back, to easy for problems if you get knocked over and impossible if seated in a car especially for a big guy like you.  For quick holsters that are worth a damn, check out Comp-Tac's MTAC, good, and a 5? day turnaround.  None of this wait 6 months for a damn holster crap.  Strong side hip is easy, and for a big guy like you, you could hide a bazooka easy.

I will look into them. I always feel somethint hitting my hip when strong side. It didn't matter before, but it's tough on me now.

I carry at home regularly, just as practice for how it feels.

Generally if it is a IWB holster you buy off the rack in a store, it sucks.

Inside waste band = IWB?

Inside wasteband. Usually its the xDm and it is inside.

I do need a better belt, but I have even carried it with those Adidas work out pants.

I tend to prefer IWB but just gotta find something more comfortable while sitting as well as standing.
