40d for $260?

A lot of body for that, but I'd buy a lens.

You mean that's a good price for the body? I'm trying to get an understanding of what a good deal really is.

Also its hard to shop for a lens and all the ones you listed come in around $700

You referenced a budget of around $500.  Should net you a $700 lens used with a rather old body.

True, I cant even find one though selling for that low currently.

May be able to nab a 40D with a 50 1.8 II prime for sub $300 with 10 months left on a square trade warranty.

/\ remember my initial recommendation?

A sales guy just talked me out of buying the 70-200 IS.

He literally said the IS is worthless unless you are moving, and usually only when you AND the subject are moving.

Only useful on slow shutters and still targets.  Not sure why the AND subject as that makes no sense.

Mind blown.

Challenged me to bring in my camera and try both. He will grab a new one and we will test.

What store?  Perhaps a good spot for lunch tomorrow?

Although my schedule may have just gotten fucked...

Make sure you shoot a still target in low light at 200mm.  You'll absolutely need it.

Also IS is HUGE for video.  Don't forget to shoot some to compare.  And again, cheat and make it worse by zooming.

Go to 3min.  Just got there myself.  200mm handheld, rofl, not useful.

At pure 70mm you can handhold WAY easier than 200mm where you will need a shutter speed that is 3x as fast...unless you have IS in which case it is normalized.

Comment:

At 200mm, you're gonna be like 25 yards away in order to get a portrait, and the DOF for those parameters is 6.5 feet. That's plenty narrow to get the subject to pop away from the background. For comparison, at f/2.8 the DOF is 4.6 feet at 25 yards. Therefore, the bigger benefit is having IS.

What he is telling me is that you will never shoot long at less than 1/200 or so.

We live in a tundra so I am pretty sure at some point you'll be pushing that.  I mean who doesn't want to extend the golden hour?

He basically slammed IS as a gimmick. Maybe everyone else has steady hands and I just have permanent DTs

ROFL.  That is my experience as well.  Obviously not using meth, but not getting stable fucking anything without it.  Absolute lifesaver shooting long EVEN in good light.  I took some across the bay shots to see how much I could zoom in on bikini's. :P

It is not a gimmick at all.  If you never leave a studio then fine.

I better limber up my jaw. I will have to blow a lot of dealers if you are gonna party.

Never seen anyone smoke a whole flood light full before.
