Some of these things I knew before taking a photograph and thinking about it. Then after taking a bunch of shots I "learned", a bunch of misconceptions because of my perspective in relation to the act of taking the picture. Now being objective again and learning about what and why things are happening my mind is blown.

I knew something logically, repetition lead to behavior, that lead to a belief that was completely illogical.

Goofy.

I just didn't learn. Basically I work for an optics company and understand them, but never bothered to apply anything. Had to have some targets that were worthwhile pushing the boundaries to care. Regrettably I find out afterwards what I didn't pay attention to, but it was a good lesson.

Missing the chance to record my wife's graduation other than a fee shots made me think really hard.

I thought your company did more with sound than optics.

Depends on if you are referring to the technique or the results. I normally stick to the latter.

What we manufacture though are optical tools. Whether they be Mach Zehnder Interferometers, Laser spectrometers, Video stroboscope, or White light interferometers. All require crafty optical techniques to minimize noise, increase SNR, and so on.

To put it in perspective. Laser pointers can be up to 5mW. Our Mach Zehnder is 1mW, but yet we can resolve femtometers of motion. Nutso.

We are in the optics region of Germany. Reason being, all the devices we manufacture are intrinsically simple (ie, you can build one in a 200 level Physics lab) but the implementation for industry requires optical sensitivity that is far from trivial.

I can accept that it's possible, but I cannot imagine how you measure a femtometer.
