I like it but fuck the SMG tranny

I am dialed in on decoding the badging. Without test driving any yet, I am most drawn to the E46 M3. I like the style, has plenty of power right out of the box, and the "M" for the better suspension and brakes. Still have a ton of questions though, as I am learning the options.

Anything bad to say about the natural aspiration?

The E46 is one of my absolute dream cars that I could own someday. It is right up there with Porsche, but looses by just a hair.

 

Just by the engineers design goals alone I can't see going wrong. Stiffer uni-body than its previous model, super low unsprung weight, beautiful 50/50 weight distribution, great power to weight ratio. Throw in the ability to easily tune and I don't think I could go wrong.

the s54 is pretty tough, the zero to sixty time is under 5 seconds out of the box. The main thing to look for is engine maintenance, of course like anything else but the VANOS system can be very finicky. They also had subframe and rear suspension issues.

I think black rims are done. 5 years ago perhaps but today, meh.

My bigger concern with that car though is that is shows the classic signs of someone who cares more about impressing someone than enjoying a car. The mods are somewhat tasteless and I'd expect that mechanically that car has been treated poorly. The ad reeks of a sloppy owner as well. Doesn't help that pictures were taken in an industrial park.

I'd ask for service records first. If they aren't complete and the dude cut corners I would NOT want that car.

I've been using tire size converter and it seems to do a pretty good job, but could always go for better.

You best bet will be check the manufactures site for accurate dimensions due to the way they convert for aspect ratio numbers. Section width will change based on rim width, so keep that in mind if your concerned about width.

No, that's just when I started to realize I needed them. These tires have 63000 on them and would go longer if I was able to rotate them more frequently. (One wore out faster than the other)

I think I want to build some crazy race car, and Porsche is the dream in general. I want to see if it's possible.

Sean turned me into Panteras also, but I'm not sure I'm up for that much work.

I settled for 34x10.5r16's the last time. They were 34.6 or some shit. Kinda stuck if you like the pizza cutter's.

that's because those are marshmallows. Are you stuck on 16" wheels or why the funky size?

I was looking to step up to an 18.

Can't have any less than 34.6" (prefer 35+) and don't want anything wider than 11.5.

Wheels need 5" back spacing (That may be too much).

Also want a tire that's very tame on the street.

That's why I settled on 285/75R18 but I don't think I want to invest in the rims as well as the $400+ extra cost in tires. Which is why I was looking at snagging some stock wheels but I'm still looking at another $1K total. Not sure if its worth it for very marginal fuel economy and looks.

What were they? Younsayong 34.6 leads me to think it was 315/75R16 which is 34.6x12.4x16.

I really hope you are right though.

There is no economy in replacing your wheels. If that is your goal, skip it.

As for looks. 16/18, both look really fluffy on an old truck. Can't really imagine throwing money at it for looks.

That leaves 2 options. 1) find something used that you can sell for what you pay, 2) run what you got for rims and skip the 35's. For efficiency and how you drive it is going to be hard to knock the stock size.

The economy that I'm suggesting would be coming from a thinner tire, not from the rim. The rim is just required to get the tire size I desire.

 

What do you mean by fluffy?

 

The reason I'm stuck on 35's is gearing. I'm geared at 4.56. I 'm not going to re-gear for a tire change. well, not this time at least.

 

All signs really point to keeping what I got. I'll probably be keeping the truck another few years then one of 2 things. 1) Upgrade 2) Engine blows (Currently have 214K) and I rebuild it, making it a fun truck and having a car for DD. The wife will have the "family" SUV by then, so I may be able to get light towing needs out of that.

 

I am keeping an eye out on the used market. I would mind some barely used for half price.
