I think I found out what killed the old Jeep. Aftermarket heads had injection chamber pre-cups installed badly and one of them fell, taking out piston #3. That's why the engine was shaky, had no power and was very smoky, not a lifter as first suspected. Pieces from the head and piston probably got into the turbo and killed it. More carnage pics to follow. 

I'm really curious what the maker of the heads has to say. I will bad-mouth his product all over the interwebs.

On a happier note, I spent Christmas with the girlfriend's family, which involved drinking lots of home brew plum brandy (a bit over 100 proof) and red wine. Quite an enjoyable 5 days.

Exhaust valves seem to go bye bye for one in my experience..Plus not to mention what you lose in back pressure IDK
