Seth and other mechanically minded people...

How would a superglue + baking soda repair last on a radiator end tank ? Stupid previous owner had the end tank gasket repaired, hammered a few tabs too hard and cracked the end tank. 

I fixed a crack in the overflow bottle (it's pressurized, unlike petrol engines and leaked quite a lot of coolant before the fix) and it lasted nicely over the last 200 miles but it's a different plastic. 

I've the same repair an intercooler end tank, so similar pressures, oil instead of coolant and lower temperatures, it held nicely.  

 

 

I can't say, Adrian. Pressures aren't really high, and if you did it and it held on the overflow I assume it would work, but without any real experience I will have to claim ignorance on this one, my friend. Sorry.

It held on the overflow, I mean I was supposed to leave the house, quickly sanded the crack, added superglue, baking soda, repeat 3 times to make a big patch, change clothes and drive. No leaks, no x hours to cure. Last I recall the overflow cap has a 15psi valve. When squeezing the top radiator hose I can't feel much pressure. 

 

I have the old radiator from the Miata, I can use it to test how well the mix sticks to radiator end tanks. 

 

Slightly related...if I buy another used radiator, I'm afraid of transmission cooler failure. What if I just ditch the in-radiator cooler and use a normal radiator for the transmission? 

 

 

 

External is fine... better than internal, in fact.

 

Bought 50 grams of Wurth superglue, much stronger than regular stuff. I'm going to go full retard and fill the entire end-tank to core seam. 

 

I like the Wurth glue. The accelerant makes it even more awesome. Wurth is an awesome company.

 

 

What about warm-up and all that jazz during winter?

Went to the Omaha Zoo/aquarium on Sunday, was really impressed with the place and whoever did the lighting in the aquarium did a fantastic job with it.  The colors they were able to bring out in the exhibits was awesome.

Matt, I appreciate the perspective, but I think our situations are very different. 2 dogs is a lot like 2 kids, There are twice the limbs and twice the personality. Any extra room is a plus and 2 dogs in one back seat is not comfortable for one of the dogs. The volume of occupancy is irrelevant because each occupant requires its own personal space.

 

Also, as I stated in my previous post. This will be a vehicle that will last into the first child. So there will be 3 and the dogs; potentially for road trips as well.

AWD where you live is a waste of money. Grab some el cheapo wheels and snow tires for $1500 instead. Puts you at about $20 with negotiating.

 

 

Agreed on AWD. The wife does not drive in the snow and I usually drive the truck if needed. 

 

The wagon idea will not work for us. It does now, but it won't later.

 

Sean, in your original post you recommended a SRX, CX-5 and XC60.

To give you an idea on what we do now (and why a wagon won't work). Our current Focus has 18cuft with the seats up and 40.8 with the seats folded.

 

Our luggage takes up the 18cuft (with the seats folded down) and the dogs take up the rest (22.8cuft). Laying down the seats gives us a flat space and place to put the folded up kennel (the dogs lay on top of it). The dogs are a bit cramped in their current amount so we want to give them a bit more space. Also, I realize that cuft isn't the end all be all as the foot print of cu ft has a lot to do wit the comfort as well.

 

So what we are proposing is to do as we do now, lay down the seats and give the dogs heavenly amounts of space. After a kid is entered in to the equation we plan to lay down one seat (the 40 of the 60/40) then have the kid in the car seat of the 60 and the dogs get a little less room. The plan is that they will have enough. Also we currently take 10 hour road trips often. When we have a child, that will not be the case so trips with kids and dogs will likely not require luggage.

Not having a barrier between a child and the dogs is a superdeeduper huge safety issue. I don't care how well trained a dog is, if you have to brake hard the animal is going to panic. Not to mention even a 5-10mph fender bender.

A large wagon or regular SUV like an explorer or larger is the only option if you want safety.

By the time your child can push a dog away you will be in the market for a new most likely.

If you were already stuck with a vehicle making a compromise might make sense. Since you can pick anything, pick what best suits your needs and if a spawn is in the car, you have to make your decision around protecting your DNA sharing parasite.

You will hate anything you are looking at now once you have kids. Across the board completely. You can't begin to predict the impact this has on your life...
