So Matt! What bolt action?

I am thinking about grabbing a 6.5-284. Likely a Savage action. Ballistics are retarded, and I want to reach out to 1000 yards. There is sooo much load data on this round that achieving a load that works with my rifle should be quick and simple.

I grabbed the 22-250 this summer for next year varmint "season". I was surprised by a Coyote hunt this fall, and went out completely unprepared. I had close range dialed in, but did not play with the scope enough to be comfortable/accurate with it beyond 150. Unfortunately we were a few hundred yards out and it took me a few misses to get close, and I don't like bouncing those 3500 FPS rockets off the ground. That is way to much speed and energy to be flying away wildly. I need to spend more time at the range. Love the Vortex Viper (6.5-24X50) optics. The low light collection is sweet, and honestly the clarity is stunning.

I actually went down yesterday and ordered my son a Savage .243 Model 10 for Christmas. I am thinking I am going to upgrade the scope for him. I may grab a Ziess Conquest (6-20X50), and another Viper of the same ilk, compare the 2, and keep whichever I want for the new 6.5-284.

The last week I started having a clunk from the rear of the Miata. Turns out one of the rear sway-bar links broke, nice...

You break more shit on your shit. I could use you as a customer... that way I could retire by mid 2015!

6-6.5 is the sweet spot for short action, non magnums. And you are right, there is so much data out there it's incredible.

6 or 6.5 creedmore is really interesting.

What I know is that I want to load my own. I also want 2 calibres minimum. One reasonable, and one for the sake of making big noise and compensation for my Nordic penis.

The best rifle I have ever fondled in person was a sako TRG. I already liked sako actions, but that was like warm butter. And more importantly it was extremely stout.

If money was no object, I would grab a pair of AI rifles and another USO scope. I'm also thinking about the DTA systems. Being able to convert the rifle from one caliber to another is appealing, and the bullpup design would be nice if I used it for hunting. Not cheep though. I would never have to move the scope though. Just keep the zero for both calibers documented.

Savage rifles are fantastic and maybe the best value out there. I would have to have a rifle made however and I don't like most of the stocks the have, and I want a box magazine.

BTW..... That viper scope is sweet.

A buddy has one and it's definitely good to look through.

Sakos are gorgeous actions. Tikka uses them. The Tikka stocks are very utilitarian, though.

Not a fan of tactical rifles, personally. Most everyone I know is, but I am old school. I love a traditional hardwood stock bolt action rifle... Of course, I also prefer a revolver. So yeah, I am weird like that.

Honestly with my 22-250, the only things I might change would be the recoil lug and the trigger group, although I have no real qualms with either, and being a low recoil rifle I will never have to worry about the lug distorting. Everything I had read about the rifle really didn't prepare me for it being so damn nice. While I am not a fan of laminate stocks I am surprised by it's strength, heft, and beauty. Perhaps some day I'll look for a nice burl beaver stock for it, but the stock must stay the same, as it's form is perfect IMO... I may have the bolt fluted, but that is really more vanity than utility.

Not sure what I am going with for the 6.5-284 though. Tikka and Savage are in the running. I do like my .270 WSM Tikka T3 Hunter, and I am enamored with the model 12 VLP DBM... but there is no real equivalent for a larger caliber long range rifle offered by Savage that will not require any work. Of course, I can get into a good Savage action and do my upgrades for less than I have into the 22-250. So I am weighing it all out.

I like revolvers as well.  I miss my old Rossi .357 Mag.  I have actuallty been reviewing a few revolvers since yesterday.

I don't like most "tactical" designs.

What I do like is the adjustable functions and vertical grip.

So that usually means more "tactical".

That's why that sako TRG is so amazing. Not much fancy shit, but adjustable in ways I need.

I'm a goofy shape.

:D

Picked my son up a ruger 357 single action revolver for Christmas. Nice gun and as close as I could find to a true cowboy gun.

Nothing makes me think cowboy like a lever action.

Lever action carbines in .44 and .357 are the shit, especially with high pressure hunting loads.

Sorta like a carbine length Mosin-Nagant. Loud and flashy with barely any kick

If only they could have done that well against Denver.

Oakland should be a simplistic game, then close the regular season out in NE.

Back to the calibre talk, I have really been thinking that if I decide to go with some super XL magnum I might do a .375 Cheytac.

.338Lapua is kind of go to, or 50bmg, but the .375 is hot fire. It's also a fraction of the cost to load from the .408 or .416.

:tehe: :tehe: :tehe:

DARPA has done the “almost” impossible and created something that we’ve only seen in the movies.

This year, DARPA has successfully tested its self-guided, mid-flight-changing .50 cal. projectile. DARPA’s “Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordinance” (EXACTO) project is tasked with “developing more accurate military artillery that will enable greater firing range, minimize the time required to engage with targets, and also help reduce missed shots that can give away the troops’ location.”

It seems that the projectile operates in the same manner as laser-guided bombs used in the GWOT. A few months ago, DARPA successfully tested the .50 cal. bullet at a distance of 1.2 miles. The projectile uses optical sensors in its nose to gather in-flight information and internal electronic systems that control the projectile’s fins—which most likely deploy in-flight, as they cannot be seen from the EXACTO photos.

I'm on a .338 Lapua of the 3. But the 50BMG strikes me as useless for a civilian round. The .375 is cool, but I don't need to be shooting over a mile. The .338 can squat at a mile, and is much more affordable to shoot, overall... plus load data is readily available. Also, and most importantly for me, it is the most comfortable to shoot. I don't need a lot of kick to love the gun... I do need a lot of accuracy. I contemplated a .308 but feel the 6.5-284  just seems like a more practical round.

One of my co-workers loves recoil, but he is an awful shot. He has a .300 ultra win mag, and a .50 Beowulf, and they have created a recoil flinch he can't get rid of. I purposely loaded 3 shots instead of 4 in my 22-250 because he was pulling it low and left. Even with the 11.5 pound beast (yes, it is a very heavy small caliber rifle) and a feather recoil he was flinching.

Just something for you to think about.

I just want to shoot comfortably. It assures a better shot.

Someone tell me about this drive...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178340

The drive in one of my lappys took a shit. I'm not sold on a straight ssd, but I am willing to consider a hybrid. I know and trust Seagates, and will be replacing a WD drive. It is going into my i5 Asus lappy, and I will reinstall Win7.
