So, help me think......

I always want shallow DOF, and more light.

I will get a FF at some point and have one crop and one FF.

The new 5Div is probably on the way, and so is the remodeled 7D.

The sigma is wide with lots of light, but cannot be used on the inevitable FF.

Buying a new body before the new ones release would be a bad idea as even if I don't want the latest and best, the last gen will drop in price.....

If I get the Tokina it will only go to 16mm and on a crop, that ain't so wide.

I hAve a 50mm (35 mm with crop factor) 1.8 and it's great for shooting people and low light situations.

Crop factor brings the number up, not down. So closer to an 80-85mm. Great length for portraits.

My 50mm is about perfect to walk around and shoot shoulder up, and interesting scenes. But it's not wide enough for any architecture.

That's for fucking sure.

What about a unipod?If your not using a timer it may be the best option as they can fold up smaller and be more user friendly in smaller spots.J

Worked great for concerts when the 'press line' was pushed back about 20 yards behind the front row due to flames.

How did it benefit you?

When snapping action it's like always having a pole to lean on. It helps to reduce the amplitude of your wobble, but it doesn't stop it.

It can help with some sports too. Soccer game for Jr or bike racing. It just keeps the camera closer to ready in those situations.

Between people walking by and such it made it easier to pick up drop and set for that band. Lens wasnt heavy but with consistantly changing light it helped having a steadier surface than free hand did.

As for a mini tripod, they do make one footers.

Okay, good. Doesn't help with the shot but getting ready for it. As a walk around that isn't necessary.

Even a 6" Gorilla pod is okay, but don't expect to hang the 2.8 70-200 on it.

The other spot where a tripod with a nice swivel head is a must is when shooting video. Vibe compensation can bite me compared to a tripod. Almost impossible to even shoot at 50mm without one.

And Matt, I hate to tease you when step further...but will.

Buying now for a FF in the future doesn't make sense for one other reason you are forgetting. All the L lenses are getting reworked with silent focusing mechanisms for video. ALL. Long term they cannot make the noise they do as professionals won't use them that way.

Invest in things you can use and sell, not in things you think you will need down the road.

The 70-200 has captured so much that I never could have with any other lens. The loaner 1.4 was also awesome too Sean. It made me really happy.

The 1.2 felt 4 times better in my hands. I went back 2 times before I gave the AmEx a work out.

It is amazing. Maybe it's because I took the last pics of my Gpaw with the 50, but it's really nice to have.
