Grab a used 17-55 and consider it wide enough. Once you have both cameras it will be what you want on the a second all the time anyways

Wiide you normally want deep dof. Barrel distortion makes them not people lenses in general

Why wide and low light? Get a tripod....

Then on top buy used and sell when you upgrade. Crop will approach and then pass ff at some point....although that crop will take different lenses.

I NEVER have a tripod.

You can have a lot of fun with a narrow DOF and wide angle. It's more cinema usually from what I have been watching, but I have been pouring over pictures. You know, over examination of a simple problem.

:-)

Always trying to minimize cost, maximize results, and also not end up wishing I would have done something different.

Me neither, but I'd carry one way before I'd carry everthing else you are.

I'm the same. Equation ALWAYS ends the same though. The only sure bet is used since you can get your $$ back.

I bought my wide for when I went to Scandinavia. My family is originally from Bergen and I wanted to remember the trip.

I'm going to "work" on this trip though.

As for the narrow DOF and wide angle, sure, but really once you get an ultra wide and you are carrying other lenses it will become your landscape, buliding, interior lens. Then "fast" glass isn't as important as sitting still and getting the light you need.

In Italy they will shun tripods inside many places. You then get to compromise. The Tokina 11-16 is NOT IS so a panorama with a faster lens may be good but then you lose your DOF so who knows. I find you need F11/13 for most building shots otherwise they get really soft in all the wrong places.

Video and a tripod is HUGE. Let me know which carbon fiber one you decide on as I need one too.

I have a great aluminum one, but it's too big to travel with. I haven't even looked at tripods to bring.

This will be a learning experience, as sharpness is really the last thing that comes into play for most portraits. Get the eyes sharp and then the softness fall off is usually flattering.

Than again, the 70-200 has no soft spots other than bokeh.

Fucking magic lens.

What about a unipod?

If your not using a timer it may be the best option as they can fold up smaller and be more user friendly in smaller spots.

Serious case of sore throat.

"Nah, man. I'm pretty fucking far from okay"

Been medicating myself for the past two days, I'm leaving for Rome on Saturday and I don't want a sore throat to fuck up my vacation.

I just found out I can apply epoxy primer by brush or roller. Looks like I'll be fixing the rust on the Miata the right way after all. Anything that is visible will be the painter's job to fix though. I don't want to give him a hard time redoing my work.

And what normally makes portraits great makes landscapes suck.

Unipods are functionally useless IMO

So, help me think......

I always want shallow DOF, and more light.

I will get a FF at some point and have one crop and one FF.

The new 5Div is probably on the way, and so is the remodeled 7D.

The sigma is wide with lots of light, but cannot be used on the inevitable FF.

Buying a new body before the new ones release would be a bad idea as even if I don't want the latest and best, the last gen will drop in price.....

If I get the Tokina it will only go to 16mm and on a crop, that ain't so wide.

16mm for portraits?

What about the ole distortion?

16mm is not nice for portraits. Lightroom can "correct" the distortion but buying a wide to shoot people isn't logical at all. Much better to have a normal zoom for that. Exactly why they make the 17-55 for crop and the 24-70 for FF.

Should I ship you the salt, or just apply it myself? ;)

I hAve a 50mm (35 mm with crop factor) 1.8 and it's great for shooting people and low light situations.
