Welcome to the IHoP v.2

Recommended Posts

I need some help. I've got a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer 4x4. It's always idled a little low every once in awhile, cycling from around 550 down to 400 and shaking a little, but only every once in awhile. Now it seems to do it often and it died while idling yesterday. I need to get it fixed. Any recommendations on what is happening? It's our only car.

Clean the throttle body. It is an electric TB, so be careful. Get a toothbrush and some carb cleaner. Remove the air inlet snorkel from the TB. Turn the key on with the engine off. Have someone step on the accelerator pedal and shoot the carb cleaner down the throttle body. Scrub the inside of the bore and as much of the plate as you can with the toothbrush. DO NOT STICK YOUR FINGERS IN IT!!! After a short period of time the throttle plates will close as a failsafe. It will rip your fingers off. Keep cleaning until it looks decent.

It is a common issue with electronic throttles. It may run like shit for a while, but give it 10 or 15 minutes, and it will be fine.

If you can find it, use gum cutter:

It's hard to find in many places but it is awesome. I can use cheap shit carb cleaner and not get it clean with a whole can. With this stuff you will need just a couple shots.

Seriously? Sweet. Any "chains" that carry it? Pretty sure the O'reilly (hey it is 3min away) near me doesn't have it.

So I noticed that the Altima was sitting out in back of the shop and I decided to go try to reset the computer. I popped the hood to find this, wtf!? There were nuts and bolts laying all throughout the engine bay, there were several different spark plugs laying around. It's in pieces.

Damn, that sucks why did you have to take the Altima to a shop?

Long story short it felt weird so we took it in for a tune up and here we are....

Doh, here is how I use "leftovers". Greek pitas being toasted into "naan", the one red snapper I didn't cook when we had Mexican with some leftover san marzano tomatoes and Mexican crema "makhani" and some leftover crab turned into California rolls.

Have a whole shelf of things that are pickled. Crazy what happens when you clean the fridge.

Depends on the locale. One O'Reilly carries it here, but the others do not.

Someone smarter than me please hopefully point out something that will make me feel good.

Voltage regulator on my sled is non-functional. I hadn't tested it first since the sled runs fine at idle and not at higher RPM. The CDI and coil I have are also used in a sled that has no regulator (unless they were artificially swapped before I bought it) so stator voltage should be fine.

Did I just find a ghost that wasn't actually the cause of my problem or was it?

Some other details that could be pertinent.

1) Ran fine last year

2) Upon initial startup I did not have my hood on. My hood has my only non-LED bulb (ie current pulling). Tail light flashed on/off while running without the hood. My tail is a standard string of LED's. Tail light runs through a voltage divider to drop the voltage so that it only gets full 12v (AC btw) when the brake comes on.

3) During my running like shit for the 10mi I ran it home my gauge lights (DC after rectifier) stayed on.

4) Yesterday at idle my gauge lights were fine any throttle and they shut on/off

5) Today at idle the shut on/off

6) Found a potential short on a Yel (power) wire near the hood. Melted by the pipe.

Did my reg just die a short death? It is my understanding there is a light bulb in these that normally FAILS. Obviously there is some sort of current soak as well. No idea what it is. Just two wires going to it and one is chassis ground the other the is yellow which is normally standard power.

I am guessing the power wire by the hood melted after it was running bad. When it first started to run bad it was only above 40mph. I jumped a road approach and came down so hard that the pipe popped off the Y pipe. Needless to say I am guessing that is when the wires melted. Insulation melted off a yellow and it is pretty close to the hood hinge. May or may not have touched it. Gre wire also melted and was touching yellow for sure but that is to the headlight "low" wire in the hood but is actually just taped off so lows now shut the headlight off. Works as a better signal than hi/lo and I always run hi's.

Since I had the problem I have:

Tested compression - 110/111 on a shitty free rental tool from O'reilly with a 18" hose. I would guess that stock is around 125-130 on a real tester.

Cleaned the carbs. All seemed good.

Checked all the power connections and replaced crimps with solder & heat shrink.

Traced all other wires for a fault.

Cleaned the variable exhaust valves.

Changed plugs

Changed the coil

New fuel line & filter

When it first happened I was at about 1/8 tank of gas. Right afterwards I filled up. I don't suspect shit in the gas because of this.

You can help me I think however. I think my cutting skills are now further along than the length of my knife.

I have been processing a few bajillion smaller cubes of meat and a fuckload of finely minced onions etc... I can use my sashimi knife and get the meat done in no time, but the vegis need a thin cheff knife. Or another specialized Japanese knife that I don't want to buy.

What knife did you decide on getting? I want to take a look at it's shape. I nearly purchased the same knife only longer, but the swell looked so short that it wouldnt rock comfortably.

What are you trying to cut? I use a 10" French style chef's knife
