Mine did the same thing a couple years back. Not sure how or why, but I replaced with stainless.

Plastic was 4 bucks. Brass was 34, and stainless which I HAVE had rust was about the same.

Plastic won.

Methane gas literally will eat it. This us why cast iron toilet flanges fail if you use a wax ring with a plastic insert.
