Just live where ur neighbor can't catch ur wifi signal.

Problem solved.

That's much more reasonable than adding a few extra characters to a passphrase. biggrin.png

I know you have lots of land, but it's not that difficult to pick up signals from over 1km away at times.

Huh? I'd LOVE for mine to reach our beach whihc is WAY closer than that. Howz?

Since it's your router, Add a yagi antenna to the router, and use another yagi to hook up to the laptop. I'd also make the passphrase even longer since you're increasing the broadcast range from the router as well.

So how was the trip?

How far can you reach with a Yagi and are they powered? ie, can I use the home automation to shut it off turn it on so it only broadcasts when I am on the boat?

I think I need a tablet and or laptop. I also think I should get a good business attache, briefcase, or bag. Need something to work instead of my backpack in case I have to look a bit more formal. Zero Halli maybe?

Anyone got suggestions?

Bag solely depends on what you want to carry.
More like brief case. Hold papers and maybe the laptop.
I would seriously lay out everything you think you'd ever want to carry and then find a bag with a pocket for each and everything. Same advice I'd give for luggage shopping, being disorganized sucks.

I have a lunch bag and a camera bag, and I don't really want those together. I also will want to bring my laptop and I will need to hold papers in it. Not the least of which can be deposits.

One of my laptop bags is a thinktank so that I can carry the DSLR as well.

I want duck so bad. It sounds so yummy. Think I will swing by the asain market and get me one tomorrow.
Duck stop off Dale?
Shuang hur
There is an awesome place near University and Dale. You'll see Ducks hanging in the window. I'd HIGHLY suggest it.

I have been shopping and I need/want 2 new lenses. The goal is to get much faster set up.

My current is an 18-135 f/3.5-6. I have a LOT of problems with dim light. It is also a huge pain getting good depth of field in many situations. I also need something with more zoom.

My T4i is of course a crop sensor so what ever the mm is, it becomes 1.6 times that for zoom.

As of right now I am thinking a fast 50mm prime just as it is the gold standard and the ever versatile 70-200mm. From canon these are about 4000 or so for the top of the pops. That is a shit load of money.

Any lower cost suggestions? Maybe just buy the 50mm prime and save for the 70-200 and rent it if I ever need it?

You are going to hate me. The biggest problem you have is the T4i, not the glass for low light. Other option is a tripod.

50mm 1.4 is a bargain, I have one if you want to shoot it. Problem is that it is too long. A 40mm would be way better.

Well, the t4i did better than any other non full frame including the 7D at the time I tested them. Using the same glass for dark shooting it handled itself better. I also need the movie function. Moving up to a 5D is not something I can afford, even if I sold my rig.

The fastest my lens can be is 3.5, and that isn't that quick at all. Anything other that at 18 the f goes up and up to 5. That is dark compared to 2.8. I am not sure but I would also guess the larger higher priced lenses have better glass and let more light in.

Higher ISO without noise would be great but I can't afford that and a lens to shoot with.

Cheapest upgrade is a tripod. And yes I am the idiot that didn't bring one on my trip.

Or get something from Sigma.

Most Tamron and Sigma lenses aren't something you want IMO. I've made that mistake once. They do have sweet spots though. The Tokina 11-16 is a helluva wide. Like it better than the Canon equivalent.

I really wish they made a 70-200 2.8 in a cropped sensor format so it was sized like the 4.0. I'd buy one in a heartbeat. The 2.8 is way too fucking big and a waste on a crop.

I loved using it! You call it a waste due to size and extra zoom?
Optics are sized for a full frame so you waste a ton of the glass. If they designed one specific for crops it'd be smaller.

That is wrong.

Give a man a fish and he eats dinner. Teach a man to fish and he sits in a boat and drinks beer all day.

When we gonna go angling?
I wish I still had a fishing boat sad.png

50mm of course but what about a cheaper lens than the high end canon prime, You don't need and really won't see the benefits from the high end so why get it first when you can drop so much less money to get your goal.

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-50mm-1-8-Camera-Lens/dp/B00007E7JU

I am waffling on the 1/4 or 1/2.

right now I have have so many shots wrecked because of lower light. So I could benefit from either. If you do start pixel peeping, the 1/2 and 1/4 are really close. The build quality of the 1/8 is really bad, and is extremely hard to use. The focus ring is a bitch.

I may not have such a hard time with using the 1/4. But I got to use the 1/2 and even not knowing too much about photography it is built better.

Other solution is get a better body and bump that ISO up to combat the low light.
LoL at new body. The only serious upgrade would be a full frame like the 5Diii unless the new 7D is a huge improvement.

At least for low light.

You will gain more steps going to a 7D than going from 3.5 to 2.8
....hmmmmmm, that really goes against what happened when we tested them.
I haven't read, but I am sure if you read other tests online they will confirm what I said.

I am waiting for the 7D M2 or 70D depending on specs. Fuckers were supposed to release it before I went on my trip.

As for your shooting. Set your speed to 1/160th of a second and then shoot to compare. You won't be as happy with your rebel when you do though.

BTW, adding IS to a 4.0 buys you better low light than using a 2.8.

I've been looking for a used 70-200 4.0 IS for that reason. Just a temp until I see what they release in a 2.8 for crop as I think it is eventually coming.

A 50-130mm 2.8 crop sensor special IS STM would be sweet.

Add a 2x tele and you'd have the equivalent of 70-200 and 140-400.

Add the 1.4 in a 35mm and wide angle and that is all I'd ever need.

for my A55 I have a 50m and I love it Honestly use it more than my zoom...

I would look into Tamron they make some great budget lenses..

My next lens will probably be a 18-200 from sony.

Here is a picture from my 50mm sony.. it was about 160$

8LLHfew.jpg

That is a great shot!

A little more F would be good IMO or too move the focus back, but I would have made even bigger mistakes smile.png

Yeah, this lens is one of the lower cheaper Sony 50mm.. It takes great pictures but has a bit of barrel distortion when you're  super close.

I'm going to backpedal a bit now. My original post would be for a stationary antenna with the sole purpose of picking up long distance. Best choice parabolic dish. A yagi would have less range distance, but a greater dispersion.

Parabolic dish on a boat won't work. Setting up a parabolic dish at home (outside), and yagi on boat might, but I'd have to do more research. Check out: http://www.ab9il.net/index.html#wifi

Might also try emailing http://www.radiolabs.com/

Both antennas (one on boat, other at home) are powered.

Is the internet on your phone at the lake way slow? Otherwise you could use it as an access point instead of connecting home.

It isn't that slow, but connecting to my home automation system remotely is interesting. Would allow me to stream anything I wanted to the boat alleviating duplicated storage and would allow me to use the audio front end I have at home.

Parabolic won't work too well although once anchored perhaps.

Might be easier to port forward your router to the computer with the home automatation and audio stuff, then use your phone to connect to your router. If you went that route then I would add a firewall to the computer that only allows your phone to connect to the ports for the home automation and audio.

If you setup a linux box then you could use firestarter for the firewall, and you could setup ssh so you could pretty much do anything.

Smart! I just did that with a cleaning bag for the stores. I hate messy stores so I made a cleaning kit.

Don't know why I didn't think of that for my daily shit.
