Need a cheap h/u for a boat

Recommended Posts

Aight, I'm in need of a cheaper ( sub $200 perferably ) head unit. I need this for my little river yacht. I need something with excellent radio reception being the primary focus. I can deal with no frills or anything else. I only have ( still working on them actually ) a pair of 6 1/2 co axials in the boat. I don't need any kind of processing or any of that. Just need to get decent reception in the middle of BFE :D Any ideas what manufacturer has the best reception ? :)

Also forgot to add that it doesn't have to be a marine head unit. Plans are for everything to be easily removed after each fishing trip. And If need be I can build in splash protection. :)

I have noticed that too. I have a nice clarion marine head unit that I used to use. I had a 10' whip ant. on the boat and the reception ( what little there was ) still sucked a$$ . So I plan to take a regular head unit. Use a metra underdash mounting kit, and a metra marine cover. The head unit will be completely sealed with the exception of the two holes in the rear of the mounting kit. I can cover those with a small piece of gortex. He!! I even have a couple small 12v fans laying around If I need it. :)

Aight, your the fourth or fifth person that has said blaupunkt. Nobody around here carries them that I know of. I'll have to check around the net I guess. Thanks man :)

Yep, marine units are completely POS's; however, the little splash screen covers they carry for them are alright. What sort of boat? For me, mine is mounted underneath the dash and couldn't get wet no matter what...in that case get one with a remote. For a boat I prefer a wired remote as it is always in the same place and can't get dropped in the drink, it also allows a "blind" mount of the deck so that you don't need line of site like normal remotes.

It's going in a 14' john boat. Need something too listen to on those long nights of catfishing. My little river yacht :D I'm not really concerned with playing cd's or anything. Mainly just want radio reception. I even thought about using flat ribbon cable, and remote mounting just the face. Then I could tuck the rest of the head unit away some where. But with the underdash kit. I can devise some quick release connectors and pull it out rather quickly. :)

don't know if you'd be interested, but i'm selling my pioneer 7700mp, asking 150 shipped but since you're you(150 shipped is on ca.com) i'll do 110 if you want to pick it up.

Don't know how the radio reception compares to anything else though, sorry.

IMO, the SuperTuner from Pioneer has been my best experiened tuner.

I did have dual tuners on the C90, but that's a bit overkill for your application.

my 940 is pretty good and it has bars to tell you the signal strength.

Its not something i would put in a boat though.

We're not talking the titanic here or anything. :D Just my little river yacht. Has all the amenities of a larger boat. But only a 4" draft ;) A high end head unit would be severe overkill.

It's going in there somewhere. But i'm leaning heavily towards easy removal. The pods I'm working on will be attached with heavy duty velcro. And they will have banana plugs for quick disconnect. The head unit will most likely end up in a very well protected little box with similar disconnects for power and such. :)

what about satellite radio?

You know I thought of that the other day. I have never tried it. I know a couple people that have the mobile version. Might give that a whirl. And see how it works. :)

i'd suggest one of those boxes they use for jeeps...that way it's secure and dry..

here's one for a pair of speakers

another pair of speaker holders, these with storage.

here's the center console/hu mount.

and they are built to be in jeeps, so you know they are at least somewhat secure from thieves and the elements....

and i agree with the supertuner. always had good luck with those. my eclipse has been pretty good too. (yeah, it's for sale.)

what about an amplified antenna? do they work?

wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :slayer:

Man I got access to large scraps of cf, kevlar, and a couple other hybrid mats at work. This sucker will be bullet proof by the time I'm done with it ;) Tried the amplified antenna didn't get good results. Only thing it seemed to do was add a whining noise to the crappy reception :D:)

No problem my brother, I can get "free" scraps that are either 36" or 48" wide ( can't remember right off hand ). Usually a yard or two long. :)

Easy to buy CF here, but not scraps so it ain't free. I can surely pick up and send though. IASCO art supply in Minneapolis.

I'd do the satellite, my boat is getting a sirius antenna so I can swap from the car and listen to football while fishing on Sundays.

Ding ding ding we have a winner. That's the main reason for me. Fishing, and listening to a football game at the same time. Makes me drool just thinking about it :)
