Decisions Decisions Help me choose!

Recommended Posts

Hey SSA, I am in need of some help selecting which subwoofers to go with that would be fit my application. I'm going to try to give as much info as possible about goals, requirments ect.. I have done lots of research on the drivers that I'm considering and while there all quality drivers, I do not have personal experance with any of them so it's somewhat hard to make a choice.

Vehicile: 2002 Acura RSX. The car is a hatchback for those who do not know. My plan in to build custom fiberglass enclosers for two 10 inch subwoofers on each side of the hatch. They will be about 1cubic foot and I also plan to port them using aero ports being that a slot port would be tuff to work out with the contours of the trunk.

Electrical and Amp: I will be adding a second battery so that I have power to drive the amp to its full potential while maintaining stable voltage. Stock alternator is 95amps. The amp I have to work with is a Rockford Fosgate t1000.1bd. 650@2 ohms 1000@1 ohm. Most birth sheets I have seen rate it about 800@2 and 1200 to 1300 @1.

Goals and budget: My goal is to have a good sounding as well as significantly louder system then what I have currently. Right now I have 2 2012 alpine type e 10's sealed running of a kenwood 8104.1d wired at 2ohms for 500 watts rms. The bass bug has bitten and now I need more. Plus these subs are gutless on the lows, which comes with a sealed setup i supose.

Budget is max and I mean max $200 per subwoofer(college drains the pockets). Music that I mainly listen to is dubstep and rap with some rock thrown in there and come classical. I know, weird combo of music lol. Sometimes I'm feeling some frank sinatra.

Choices:

The subs that I have been considering are either 2 of the new 2012 alipine type S's, 2 skar VVX 10's, or 2 sundown sa10's. I have modeled them all in winisd and the alpines show to beat the other two choices out across all ranges, which I found really strange. The only concern that I have with the alpines are they wont be able to handle abuse, and the sound quality of them. They are an underhung driver so they should sound good but I'm skeptical.

The sundown and skars seem to fall off really fast after about 50hz which also concerns me on that end.

I would just like your guys opinions on what you think would suit my allpication best since many of you have had personal experiance with these products and I have not.

Thanks

Kevin

Of the 3 listed I'd vote Sundown. Have you looked at Dcons?

Are you dead set on that installation plan of the 10's on each side of the trunk?

Hey all, thanks for the replies. Yes I have looked at the dcons but I'm concerned if they will be a large enough improvement over what I currently have. I I know sq will be better and they are great for why they are but how much output will I gain? I am not set on 10s but somewhat set of installation on each side because I need to keep trunk space. Any other suggestions are welcome as well. Thanks for the welcome to ssa!

I agree with the GCON recommendation. They should be on your list.

And where are you going to be the extra batt?

Hey guys the extra batt will be in the trunk with zero awg or two running to it. Do you guys think the dcon would match the output of the other subs listed? The gcons I have looked at buy they would be at the tippy top of the price range after shipping costs. Would only be able to afford 1 right now.

DCON no, GCON yes. I would skip the extra battery and use the space for a better enclosure.

I would skip the battery but I don't think my stock electrical would support it. Amp calls for 150 amp external fuse. 80% efficiency at 1ohm at 1200rms would draw some serious amperage.

The Gcons I would really like to have but another issue with them apart from cost is enclosure size. Smallest ported enclosure recommend would be 1.25 cubic feet which would not work for enclosures placed on the side of my trunk.

I was doing some brain storming today, taking mesurements, and thinking how I could shoehorn the Gcons in while maintaing trunk space and optimal enclosure size. The subs would be firing towards the cabin though compared to towards the back of the vehicle. Or for price vs perfromace I have been peeking at one Icon 12 ported. :) from what I have been reading and looking at on youtube it's starting to look like a winner. Good sq, good output, and total cost less the two Gcons. Now I just have to do some research on how sub placement, and which direction the sub is firing will effect the sound.

Thinking of building a box acoss the back of the hatch firing towards the cabin. This will still allow me to fold my seats down for large items that I may need to transport.

I will let you guys know how it all goes and what i decide. Possibly a build log and review as well. Need to make up my mind because the girlfriend is buying the subs for me for me birthday :) woot

Any other suggestions are welcome as well. Thanks !!
