BM proto listening impressions

Recommended Posts

So Jake and I rigged my sis's ~1.4 ft^3 enclosure and Hifonics Z600 amp up in my car with the BM 12" in it tonight. The amp was something totally different, the sub was positioned different, the box was different, etc - so NOTHING was the same as what I'm used to. That, and my Eclipse's voltage output shocked the piss out of her Z600 - I had to turn the gain down ALL THE WAY and then turn the output down on my HU also. Haha.

Anyway, once I got it somewhat dialed in Jake and I began really listening to it. The phantom of the opera song on the Telarc demo CD was the first track we listened to and it really showed how deep that little sucker can get. It dove down just as deep as our big boys can. Next we put in Tocatta in B which is pretty much our staple of subwoofer testing. The little BM surprised us, showing little to no signs of fatigue even after we had it turned up for the entire song pushing the amp to its limits (it started distorting). We never got the sub to talk back to us even on the Trittico blasts that typically ruin subwoofers. The Z600 couldn't get the BM to smack the backplate in the sealed enclosure we had it in before the amp began distorting, so that was VERY promising.

All-in-all, the BM showed Jake and I that it is worthy of getting the SI logo plastered on its pretty little face! :fing34:

Eh...pictures would have just been of the back of a box in my teggy. I won't disclose frontal pictures of this proto yet because a few things are being changed for the final version.

What do you mean?

is the BM coming out of the same place as the MAG?

that does not sound right but you know what I mean, oh and have you thought of a new name for it? (meaning like when there are new prototype cars there is an insider name for the vehicle until it is released to the public)

At this point the name will remain the same and we are not disclosing anymore build house information (hopefully none has leaked out as it is, but in case it has, no more info will be released). ...mainly because it doesn't matter. As long as we are happy with the build, that's all there is to it.

Shouldnt it be the consumer that should be happy with it more than the company ;);)

If the consumer isn't happy, then the consumer can buy another speaker. ;) So far, no complaints so we're going to keep doing things the way we've been doing them.

That, and we are also the consumer. We build products that we would happy to own, not just because we feel like it.

Nick pretty much summed it up. The BM is a mean little speaker that certainly deserves the SI name printed on the front. It held it's own in a way very uncommon for drivers in it's price category -- holding composure at very low frequencies with high output with no crying for mercy.

I may consider swapping my Mag for a BM to save some weight when they are released since I'm getting old and don't listen so loud anymore :) Of course the Mag will end up in the house... don't think it's getting away from me any time soon!

You missed the point.

You were supposed to let us try it out ;);)

OOooooohhhhhhhh, gotcha. ;)

(and yes, I obviously missed the point). ;) But the proto isn't being sent out anyway. Too many cosmetic changes are going to happen and I'm not going to have pictures of it as it sits on the net b/c people will think that is how they are going to look when they won't actually look that way. Know what I mean?

yep yep

Its a concept woofer.....literally.

so concept is building it? j/k

i may try a pair of 10's as long as they don't get too close to the price of a single D2 12".
