new used truck

Recommended Posts

i picked this truck up a few weeks ago, for almost a steal,

its a 1993 6.5 turbo with a 5 speed, crew cab long bed.

it runs drives but bellows white smoke at start up and does so for 15 mins or so untill its hot, then it smokes no longer,

i have been trouble shooting the smoke issue, turns out it can be alot of things.

currently i am going thru the glow plugs, and what nots hoping this fixs it, if not it can be

fuel injectors,

injector pump

timing chain

fuel return,

i have narrowed it down to those as the smoke smells of raw fuel. and not anti freeze, and i also do not use any.

this should be a good truck to have around, for the jet skies, to pull my car around to long shows, and maybe ill buy a camper trailer.

heres a lil sneak peak before i get to working on it too much

Score! Congrats bro. Looks good from the outside. As for the smoke I'd guess the valve stem seals. Good luck with the project.

Nice, a guy at work has one but a 96 I believe, his smokes on start up also, blows alot of black smoke when in throttle with low boost and runs hot alot. I will ask him what he thinks it is. But with all that his truck still puts in work everyday pulling my 24ft enclosed

He says head gasket, when it warms up it expands and stops smoking. He sai white smoke is water and if you check coolant levels everyday you probably will se your looking alittle as time goes

I thought white smoke could be from either water or fuel.

Excess fuel that wasn't fully burned off when shut down. Once it's started later, it's not fully warmed up, so that excess fuel is only partially burned.

Nice truck. Real nice. I hope you get the issues worked out. Lately, I have been seeing duallies with those 24"s on them and they look sick. I know if it were me I would flat black it and murder it out.

it smells of fuel.. not of anti freeze, and i use no anti freeze,

extra fuel can be white, unburned carbons of fuel are black,

im getting it figured out,.

if it were a head gasket the uper radiator hose would be pressurized at start up aswell.. and its not.

im 95% sure its not head gasket related, but i guess well find out.. thanks for asking :D

hmm, maybe turbo is going bad. idk if this thing has a egr or not, but i do know that since its a diesel, it smokes which clogs the egr and fucks with everything.... just a thought

ok so i have been balls deep into trying to get this truck to stop smoking, so much so that dani has been pretty upset, because if im not outside turning a wrench then im sitting right here reading and reading and googling

so today i tried somthing that would help me trouble shoot if its the timing chain that is strecthed causing the injector pump to fire before the stroke is peaked,......

and indeed, i un bolted the IP twisted it a dime width and boom.... so far no smoke....

so its bitter sweet.. i found the problem... but now i need a new timing chain.. and i need to reset the IP after its replaced...

also lastnight my glow plug relay/control mod started giving me shit... so i have to replace that too...

i have more time then money involved at this point. i only really have 30 bucks in glow plugs that i dropped in.

im going to give it a few hours then go out and crank it again.. .see if indeed the smoke is gone :D
