12 inch zcon sounds blown at higher freq. could it be the box?

Recommended Posts

hey guys i have a quick question i recently built a box for two zcon 12 inch subs.

it consists of a single 6 inch aero tuned to 37 hz only 9 inches depth in a enclosure 5.46 after sub displacement

it seems like the sub closest to the port is unloading or sounds Blown at frequencies higher then 40 hz but the one on the left doesn't do this.. could it be the encloser is causing the sub to unload and sound distorted?

i had designed a different box which would be a slot port with these specs

gross volume 6.98 ft^3

port volume : 1.43ft^3

physical port length 20.00"

port bends : no

Baffle displacement : 0.19ft^3

port area range 60-80in^2

port area 81in^2

port area per ft: 16.27in^2

net volume : 4.98ft^3

tuning frequency : 37.05 hz

2 common port walls

woofer disp. : .38

It could very well be that the woofer closest to the port is unloading on the high notes making it do funky shit.

How much power do you have? Do you have any current pictures of the enclosure and it's surroundings?

Have you inspected the sub when taken outside the box, and tried a few free air sine waves? If it sounds good to you then try switching the subs into different holes to see if the one that sounded good earlier, and vice versa.

no i havent to tell you the truth and i really didnt think about that till i posted this to switching subs till now.. free aired them at 20 hz size wave -3 db at around 500 watts per sub with a a/c true rms meter and a a/c multi meter when i first had gotten them

lol well it was tuned alot lower = more port but it only sounded good on really slowed down music

i just didnt want to build a new box with out any input is the box above have enough port?

It needs a lot more port and your current port is to close to the trunk wall. Most likely this is causing the unloading issues.

got you would the sketch up above be better of a box then the current set up ?

Yes the box in the sketch would work a lot better. Your current box is maxing out your space in the trunk. Have you tried to turn your box around? Fire it into the cabin? If you did that and sealed it off from the trunk, I believe your results will be a ton better.

I am using that much port area for 2 8" mids...

Is there a reason you strayed so far from the recommended enclosure?

No sir just a new to the aero port thing read it in a couple of different places that it would sound good.. come to find out they were incorrect.. would there be enough port area from the drawing above ? Which is 81 sq*2 for 4.98 cf ?

That port is acting like a longer port, because of how close it comes out to the trunk, changing your tuning.

Also make sure there are no air leaks whatsover.

You need a lot more port for those subs, your sketched box would be much better.
