Amplifier class AB or D class for Highs?

Recommended Posts

I have read on a few websites the pro's and con's of D class and Class AB, right now I have a US amps md42, and I am looking to buy a new high amp and really want to try a D class. Anybody out there have any real world experience or advice? BTW, I would like between 150 and 225 watts per channel @ 4 ohms. Looking for a 4 channel. Thanks for any help.

As long as you buy a reputable amp you won't hear a difference in a car. Anyone that says differently sells snake oil.

The only advantages I know Class D amps have are smaller footprints, usually dont draw as much current (not running as hot, more efficiency) and some have active/bandpass crossovers.

Some say A/B amps sound better but I dot think the average car audio enthusiasts will hear the difference if there really is one.

I still feel that class A/B packs more low end punch than the class D counterparts but the class D can play cleaner with less distortion and heat than the class A/B but i still prefer my class A/B amps for front stage.

I just finished an install with a Zed Leviathan class D. It sounds really good, but like M5 said, it was a reputable design.

Class D has come a long way in the last decade as far as fidelity in concerned.

Any competently designed class D will be audibly indistinguishable from any competently designed class A/B

Thats Real, I've looked at ZED AUDIO and JL AUDIO for D class or I'm also looking at DC 175.4 or a SUNDOWN for class A/B. I really want to try one of the ZED 4 channels.

I have an alpine PDX 4.100 and it sounds amazing and it replaced an old school alpine class AB design. In terms of sound quality can't tell the difference.

I have heard that amp on some focal polyglass bla bla, and the combination sounded great.
