Port Direction

Does the direction the port is facing matter very much? What would the best direction be in this setup?

12" RL-p downfiring in an extended cab nissan frontier. The box will be ~2cubes tuned to ~30Hz. Would it be better to fire out the side towards passenger side, out the top, or forward toward drivers seat.

If anyone has experience with this truck specifically that would be great, but just ideas would work.

I have always put my ports on the same plane as the sub-driver----just my thoughts

I have always done that and heard that before too. But I'm not sure if it is the same for a downfiring box (never done one before).

the kind of port you are using might effect what direction you can go,

Well it will be a slot port I am sure. Although I haven't looked at using a round port on this box mainly because I think it maybe too long. Haven't gotten a length on a round port though.

edit: a round port (or 2 in this case) is out of the question. It will be too long

how much port area u lookin for? typically a round port is shorter because u can get away with less port area..in the case of the rl-p12, a 4" round will be plenty.

as far as port direction, in theory same plane is ideal, however, in real world application, that isn't necessarly the case. especially if chasing tenths. IME with my truck (04 silverado xcab) with downfiring ten's, the best port placement was to the rear. i've also used a driver's side facing port in a different box with downfiring subs, but the rear facing gave the best results. might not be the case with ur truck, but i'd wager u'd like the results. also, u have to remember, u need as much clearance from ur port to an object (ie: floor, wall, door) as the width or diameter of the port. or u could potentially "bandpass" ur enclosure.

side facint was loud in a friends ext GMC 1500 but the subs where upfiring. THE TWO PORTS WHERE EVEN OPPOSING EACH OTHER.

down sub up port is out of the question.

i'd say out the side or out the front.

So, you think a single 4" round port would work? Hmmmm.... I think that is what I'll go with then and probably try side firing or on the same plane as the sub. Rear firing the port is definately out because the box will be right against the back wall.

Ok so what I'm getting by hand and bass box pro is a 4" port with about 16" length.

One more quick question, the volume displaced by the round port, bass box pro is showing ~.15 cuft with a PVC pipe of .25" thick, sound about right?

my new enclosure is forward with the port to the drivers side. Between it andsound deadener im hoping to start to nudge 148-150 on Audiocontroll and do my old score on TL.

as far as SUV's CRX styles work well

How do you like the sound with the port facing the passenger side? I have had it that way before with subs facing forward, but it was my first box ever and I think that had a big role in me not liking it. I think I'm going to draw up a couple different plans and see which I like better.

If one doesn't sound good I could always build another box....

So I guess the design is pretty solid? should the enclosure be touching the floor on all sides or is leaving the front part open like like more ideal?
