You want at least the amount of space as the port width. Say if the port is 22Lx5w, 5 inch would be minimum.

5" for port width of a square port? So 5" x 5"?

Or 5" width, and 22" long / high, so 5" x 22"?

If the latter then I don't understand how that "rule of thumb" works, 22" x 5" is the same as 5" x 22", but one would require 5" of space and the other 22" of space?

Just use the smaller of the two. For round ports just use the port diameter.
