Which of these three 15's, on 500w?

Recommended Posts

Alright, right now I am in the market for a single 15 inch sub. I have a clean 500w to work with. I was considering three different subs. The Sundown E-15, the SKAR IVX 15, and the Obsidian OA-15. I am looking to get something under $180. So far I have somewhat disregarded the sundown for a couple reasons. One being the skar and obsidian like the lows a wee bit better, and, just out of personal preference, I kinda want the rubber surround (what I have now). I'm leaning more toward the Obsidian... probably because of its longer throw, and larger/stronger magnet. I don't want a DCON... just saying that now. So, for any of these subs, they will end up going in a ported box built to spec tuned to 30Hz. For anyone wondering, I am currently running a Rockford Fosgate P2D412 sealed. Bottom line question is, which will be loudest on 500 watts? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

"Skar and Obsidian like the lows better" What is that based on?

Does a bigger magnet mean it's louder?

What don't you like about the dcon?

Loudest? At one frequency? Overall?

No one knows which will be louder in your enclosure alignment, and vehicle. Only assumptions can be made.

I'm glad your power is "clean", I hate it when mine gets dirty, and I have to bring out the broom and dustpan.

As much as I didn't help you in any way, perhaps you understand my reasoning. Generalities get no where, and assumptions aren't exactly helpful.

What you will get is people who like one brand over another, and suggesting it's better.

LOL @ stefan, who brings up some very valid points. I have to honestly say, I'm wondering all the same things.

There's never any one answer for something like this, but as always the best answer is the one that best fits all the goals and requirements, both of which are a little tough to get from the info given if they were even in that bit of info.

lol nice Hinote

I will just answer your first question, out of those 3 choices, I would pick OA.

But please do adhere to Hinote's suggestions.

I would chose the OA over the Skar. And I wouldn't rate the E-15 the same. You would need to look at the SA line to be comparable.

Personally I would go with the OA for looks, sound quality, and over all function. They provide a good balance for a great price.

Go for the SA-15! You can pick a B-stock one up for a good price. I upgraded from two P2D412s to my SA-12s, and I also like lows. Depending on your box frequency, SA-15s could get low. Ran my two 12s on a TRX2.550, putting out 550 dirty watts to them(I don't clean my watts too often). They were definitely louder than the P2s.

thanks for all the input. sorry i was so vauge with my question(s). and for anyone giving shit about my "clean" power... i meant not distorted, or clipping. glare.gif haha. and for stefan... 1. based on other peoples opinions 2. no, but i like some ass on my subs, plus it has a higher BL, but idk how magnet strength affects sq... 3. i dont like the non stitched leads 4. I know there isn't much that can be determined based on the info i gave, but i want as flat as a response i can get. and yes, ik the cabin will peak with different freqs 5. i already explained that.... anyway, thanks for your help. btw, none of this is hatin, so please dont take it like that if it souns like it.

The 187 would be more comparable to the E-15 which are both 2" VC's.

Again, of all the 3 I would chose the OA if you like chopped and screwed and bass heavy rap. If you listen to more rock and alternative I would steer towards the SA.

Yeah, I have decided to go with the OA... I listen to A LOT of dubstep, some rap, and occationally some classic/alternative rock and I love the way lows...So I'm thinking this is a good choice.

I think you will be quit happy. Do you plan to go ported or sealed?

I am going to go ported at 30Hz.

An OA 15 in a biggish box would get my vote out of those 3, or a diamond D3 15 :)
