Enclsoure bracing

Recommended Posts

I am noticing some mixed thoughts on enclosure bracing. My opinion on bracing is to brace areas larger than two square feet. Again that is my humble opinion, no scientific study. I have done a little bit of research and I have not been able to come up with an definitive answer. I had a Team SSA member tell me today that a mounting baffle for 8 12" subwoofers does not need bracing. That seems like a far stretch for me to believe. But then again, I am basing my enclosure bracing off a hunch.

Can anybody name a scientific evaluation that has been performed on enclosure bracing and it's proper application? Or even a good article written by a reputable source on enclosure bracing?

depending on how many layers of wood it is, you don't always need bracing.

I like to over brace my boxes, home audio style.

I dont believe there is a scientific evaluation to enclosure bracing. It is good practice to brace every enclosure. It helps greatly with panel resonance. I find window bracing to be the most effective since it attaches to four sides on the enclosure instead of just two.

I agree going overkill doesn't hurt as long as you account for the displacement. As far as the bracing in the 8 Sa twelves box I agree with you, even though it is double baffled I would brace it.

Agreed. Usually the baffle is the weakest point. Obviously because of the hole(s) cut in it. In that specific box the baffle will be very weak even though it is twice as thick.

Im glad im not a Team SSA member. There is no general rule of thumb when it comes to enclosure bracing, if it flexes add bracing.

If you use that knowledge that the baffle is that weak because of the speaker holes, dont you think adding bracing would be a win lose situation. Yes it would make the mounting baffle stronger at the bracing points but it would also make it weaker were there is no bracing considering the small amount the brace is actually attached to. Im not saying i disagree with you guys at all, i just think the only way to make that baffle bracing as effective as the side wall bracing it would require multiple points of bracing (more than 2).

I like to brace my enclosures with little Asian boys... fill up the box with at least 2-3 of them...

My wall for the mustang will be 2 layers all over with a triple baffle. That should be more than enough for two 18's..

I would always brace the enclosure. Silly not to use bracing since it takes very little internal volume. If an enclosure is so close on the internal space you have that bracing would throw it off, its time to back up and work up a design for plan B.

I agree with Sean, Window bracing FTW!
